Live Commentary

  • That concludes our match commentary. Once again, I'm Rudi Schuller (@RudiSchuller), and it's been my pleasure bringing the commentary to you.
  • A tough ending to the night for a TFC side that battled back after conceding the first goal. Santos was full value for the win.
  • 90' + 2'
    AssistDaniel Ludueña
  • 90' + 2'
    GoalC. Ramírez
  • 90' + 2'
And just like that, it's 3-1 for Santos. Ramirez finds himself wide open on the left as TFC pushed for an equalizer, and he has all daty to pick out the far side of Freddy Hall's goal.
  • 90'
    GoalDaniel Ludueña
  • 90'
GOAL!! Santos gets a dagger from Luduena after his run through the heart of the TFC defence goes mostly unchallenged.
  • 88'
Corner to Santos. Easily cleared by Toronto's defence, but then the ball is pumped back into the Toronto area and Baloy heads it off the post.
  • 84'
A huge roar from the crowd as a black cat bolts across the pitch. Not sure which team this is a bad omen for.
  • 81'
BIG SAVE!! Hall once against gets up and tipped a dangerous effort over the bar. Santos looking very threatening as the clock winds down.
  • 79'
Hall forced into two very good, very similar saves in quick succession as Santos target the upper left corner of his goal. The TFC GK is equal to the task.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionH. Gómez C. Ramírez
  • 75'
Game has picked up and is being played at a break neck pace right now. Could make for a good final 15 minutes.
  • 71'
Corner to TFC. Cleared after a couple of dangerous bounces.
  • 68'
    GoalQuincy Amarikwa
  • 68'
GOAL!! Amarikwa gets hold of a loose ball after a Frings free kick hits several players in the Santos Area. The TFC player's shot eluded several players on the way into the goal. A seeing eye ball, really.
  • 65'
Herculez Gomez steps up to the kick, and his curling effort doesn't miss the upper right corner by much. Good FK by the American.
  • 64'
Eckersley fouls a charging Santos player HARD, resulting in a free kick for the visiting side from 25 yards out. Could have been a card, but the Englishman gets away with it.
  • 63'
Hall gets down quickly after a dangerous ball gets played into the TFC area. Two Santos players were within striking distance, but the Toronto GK was there first.
  • 61'
Santos is doing a good job of stretching the field when possession is regained, forcing TFC to be mindful of throwing too much forward. A counterattacking goal by the visitors is a consistent threat.
  • 59'
Toronto pressing for the equalizer, forcing Santos to clear their lines more often than the quick-passing Mexican side would like.
  • 53'
Corner to TFC. Frings' ball bounces about before finally getting cleared.
  • 51'
MISS!!! Quincy Amarikwa hits the post after a great passing sequence by TFC results in a perfect ball from Wiedeman finds the substitue, but he can't finish from two yards out.
  • 49'
    AssistMarc Crosas
  • 49'
    GoalC. Quintero
  • 49'
GOAL! Quintero makes an immediate impact as he beats O'Dea to the ball and hits a laser into the upper part of the net from a seemingly impossible angle.
  • 47'
Wiedeman beats his man down the right and fires a hard, low shot across the face of goal that misses by inches. Looks like TFC is aiming for a quick start to the half, just like the opening frame.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionE. Lugo C. Quintero
  • 46'
    SubstitutionEric Hassli Quincy Amarikwa
  • Also, Darwin Quintero comes in for Edgar Lugo.
  • Looks like Quincy Amarikwa is replacing Eric Hassli for Toronto at the start of the second half. Unfortunately for TFC, as Hassli has looked quite good.
  • And there's the halftime whistle. 0-0 is a fiar scoreline given the flow of the play, although Santos should really be ahead if not for that incredible whiff by Peralta from less than six yards out.
  • 45'
Not much going on as the half dies off.
  • 39'
Santos counters quickly, and after some good give and go sequences, Lugo's attempted chip goes well high, drawing a sarcastic cheer from the crowd.
  • 38'
A Wiedeman cross from the right flank gets on Hassli's head, but the redirection misses by about a foot.
  • 37'
Frings plays himself into a good shooting position at the top of the Santos arc, but his shot curls harmlessly wide.
  • 32'
    Yellow CardTerry Dunfield
  • 32'
Dunfield now cautioned after he protests a challenge on his teammate Morgan. Ref not looking likely to put up with much, tonight.
  • 30'
The Canadian international looks to be ok though, as he's back on the field after heading off with the trainer.
  • 29'
Dunfield down on the pitch looking to be in some amount of agony while clutching his back.
  • 24'
SHOCKING MISS!! Peralta gets the ball oplayed to him inside the TFC six, and the Olympic gold medallist completely whiffs on what should have been a tap-in. Unreal stuff.
  • 20'
Wiedeman finds himself with half a yard at the top of the Santos area, and his low shot goes inches wide of the left post. Entertaining back-and-forth stuff so far.
  • 19'
The follow up corner is dealt with by Toronto.
  • 18'
Corner to Santos. The ball bobbles around at the penalty spot before being booted out. The ensuing play sees TFC clear for another corner.
  • 15'
    Yellow CardDarren O'Dea
  • 15'
    Yellow CardO. Peralta
  • 15'
Corner kick to TFC. Before Frings can take it, Toronto's Darren O'Dea is shown yellow for shoving a Santos player, who moments later does the same and also gets cautioned. The kick eventually gets taken and gets cleared out.
  • 13'
BIG SAVE!!! Freddy Hall uses his entire frame to stretch out and catch a rocket fired by Daniel Luduena from 20 yards out. Big cheer of appreciation from the small crowd.
  • 12'
Santos seeing more of the ball in the past few minutes.
  • 10'
Oribe Peralta does a good job to cut inside of Ashtone Morgan on the right flank, freeing himself up for a sharp angle shot from 10 yards out. TFC keeper Freddy Hall gets down quickly to smother the shot, though.
  • 8'
Hassli with some fancy footwork inside the Santos area, but his left-footed effort goes well wide.
  • 5'
Torsten Frings already looking very influential in the centre of the park. That weekend rest looks to have given him an extra spring in his step.
  • 2'
Toronto with some early pressure to start things off. Nothing serious, though.
  • 1'
    And we're underway!
  • The players are on the field, and we're ready for kickoff.
  • Santos Laguna starting XI: Sanchez, Alanis, Crosas, Lugo, Rogridguez, Luduena, Gomez, Baloy, Peralta, Ibanez, Adachi
  • Toronto FC starting XI: F. Hall; J. Hall, Eckersley, O'Dea, Morgan; Wiedeman, Dunfield, Frings, Johnson, Silva, Hassli
  • Tonight will be the third meeting between these two sides. They played a two-game series in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal stage earlier this year, with Santos winning on a 7-3 aggregate.
  • It's been a lovely late summer day here in Toronto, with the thermostat hitting 26C and not a cloud in the sky. It's rapidly cooling off here at BMO Field as the sun sets, and we're expecting a kickoff temperature of 19 degrees, with a breeze coming in off Lake Ontario.
  • Good evening and welcome to Goal.com's live play-by-play coverage of Toronto FC vs. Santos Laguna. My name is Rudi Schuller (@RudiSchuller) and I'll be providing coverage tonight.
