Toronto extends its unbeaten record to five in all competitions with a 1-0 win over Salt Lake. Joao Plata, the shortest player in MLS at 5-foot-2, scored the only goal.Toronto FC's midseason turnaround gained some traction Saturday with a 1-0 over Real Salt Lake. Joao Plata scored the only goal as the Canucks sent RSL back to the United States without any points in tow.
The visitors had the better of the early going. Fabian Espindola put a shot off the crossbeam and Alvaro Saborio spurned a handful of half-chances as RSL put Milos Kocic, in for the injured Stefan Frei, under pressure.
Toronto's best chance came when Plata found Peri Marosevic in the box, and the former FC Dallas forward blasted his shot straight at Nick Rimando.
Those two linked up again for the goal in the 77th minute. Plata collected an overcooked cross on the left wing and juked past his marker. Parosevic made the near-post run as Plata hit a low hard cross that wriggled under and through the bodies on its way to nestling into the far netting.
The win means TFC is unbeaten in five matches in all competitions, an impressive turnaround in what seemed destined to end a failure of a season under first-year coach Aron Winter. RSL now has serious questions to answer with this defeat marking its third in the last four.
