Both teams are coming off losses in league play, and will be dealing with absences due to the World Cup.The World Cup period begins for New York and Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon, and both teams will have to play shorthanded.
Toronto hosts the Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field (4:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live). The Reds will be without Michael Bradley, who is off with the U.S. national team, but starting goalkeeper Julio Cesar will play versus New York before joining up with Brazil.
The visitors, meanwhile, will have to cope without Roy Miller (Costa Rica) and Tim Cahill (Australia).
One player TFC will surprisingly be able to count on is Jermain Defoe, who was only an alternate on Roy Hodgson’s England roster, a move he admitted left him “devastated.”
To help make up for Bradley’s absence, TFC acquired Collen Warner from Montreal in exchange for Issey Nakajima-Farran on Friday. Warner won’t be available for the Red Bulls match, however, as he’s suspended following a red card last weekend.
