Toronto FC got off to a hot start, but the visitors fought back to earn a draw in the Canadian leg of the CCL quarters.
The home side got off to a flying start. The Galaxy failed to clear an 11th-minute corner kick and the ball bounced kindly to Ryan Johnson, who quickly half-volleyed past Josh Saunders to give TFC a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, TFC was in dreamland. Torsten Frings collected the ball and swung a long cross to an unmarked Luis Silva. The rookie, making his professional debut, was wide open and angled a great header into the far corner to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
The MLS Cup champs struck back 10 minutes later. An overlapping Sean Franklin fired in a cross from the byline. Stefan Frei's punch was unconvincing, and it fell to Mike Magee who fired home to halve the deficit.
Both teams traded chances after the break, but neither found the breakthrough until the 88th minute, when the Galaxy grabbed a killer second away goal. David Beckham whipped in a corner which Edson Buddle won in the air. Off a scramble, Donovan poked home from close range.
The 2-2 final will favor the visitors, who return home to face TFC in the second leg at the Home Depot Center in a week's time.
