Toronto FC 2-1 Colorado Rapids: Danny Koevermans brace keeps TFC's slim playoff chances alive

Abelimages

Two second half goals from Danny Koevermans were enough for Toronto to see off the Rapids, with Toronto's win keeping it alive in the playoff race, for now.

Toronto FC kept its slim playoff hopes alive collecting a 2-1 home win against the visiting Colorado Rapids, returning to the site of the club's 2010 MLS Cup triumph. Danny Koevermans struck twice in the second for the Canadian side, while Sanna Nyassi halved the deficit for Colorado.

Neither side was able to make an impact on the scoreline in the opening half, though there were some good looks at each end. Ryan Johnson was active for the home team with some decent setup play, but couldn't find the target himself, while Omar Cummings had a shot well-saved by Milos Kocic to keep things level going into the half.

Toronto came out strong following the restart and found something to show for it in the 52nd minute. Eric Avila played a sumptuous cross-field ball to find Ashtone Morgan, who pinged in a cross behind the back four for Koevermans to redirect into the net.

Not content with just one goal, the former PSV man found his second just eight minutes later in impressive fashion. Nick Soolsma swung a dangerous curling cross towards the far post, and Koevermans got just enough on it with a diving header to redirect it into the net to make it 2-0 on the hour mark.

The Rapids got one back in the 70th minute after some excellent work from Nyassi. The Gambian took the ball down the left side from his own half, skipping past the challenge of Torsten Frings to arrive in the box. Nyassi squared for Cummings, who had his initial attempt blocked by Morgan, but Cummings' pass from the rebound squirted through to Nyassi, who hammered it home with Richard Eckersley playing him onside.

There were some nervy moments in the last 20 minutes for Toronto, as Kocic made a fine save on Nyassi from distance, while Eckersley made a huge save on the line in the 90th minute to deny Drew Moor with Kocic prone. Still, Toronto was able to hold on for a win that keeps its playoff hopes dangling by a thread.
