Two great saves in the first half to deny first Gomez, then Kone with a stop which could be save of the season as he reacted rapidly to turn the ball away from goal. Very good display.
Had a good game and was probably Sunderland's best defender. He was strong in the tackle and his positioning was spot on as he always seemed to pick up the runs from deep which stopped attacks in their tracks.
Was occasionally troubled by the threat of Kone especially when the Ivorian was running at goal. Was dominant in the air in his own box and caused a few problems for the Latics in an attacking sense at set pieces.
Played well down the left. The 22-year-old was solid in defence and showed his attacking prowess when raiding forward. His link-up play with McClean was not quite there and prevented more success on that side of the pitch.
Had a quiet first half as he failed to see much of the ball and when he did have possession he was not convincing. Stepped up in the second half as he gave Boyce a torrid time as he ran at him with pace and skill. His delivery was first rate and he could have had several assists if the strikers attacked the ball.
Tried to get things going for the Black Cats and always seemed to find the right man when he needed to. However he could not be as effectual as he would have like as he was often forced to take the easy option when pushing forward. Came to live in the second half as he was afforded more room.
Raided forward well, as he tried to support Johnson whenever he could. Had a few efforts from outside the area which nearly troubled Al-Habsi but his radar was slightly off today. He struggled to pick his man defensively and was often bailed out by Bramble behind him.
Set pieces which are usually the best part of the Swede's game were not the best especially in the first half as he struggled to beat the first man. His performance was a bit one paced.
Showed lots of drive and determination needed in the absence of Lee Cattermole but did not quite have the quality final product needed when he got into advanced positions with the ball.
Did not have the best of games. He passed a late fitness test to play and looked out of sorts on the right as he often lost the ball in possession and his crossing never found a red and white shirt. Improved in the second half as he found more space in the Wigan half.
Was initially starved of service as the Sunderland midfield just could not get him the ball in the box in the first half. His movement was often good as the Latics defense was forced to use a physical approach to stifle him which led to free kicks around the box. Showed his predatory instincts to find the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Ali Al Habsi
Could do nothing to stop Fletcher's strike. His handling was solid and his kicking was accurate. He made the decision to punch the ball clear from corners which seemed to work out well for the Latics, as he got good distance on them.
Had a good first half as he nullified the threat of McClean, however, he began to struggle with the Irishman in the second half as he started to up the ante and run at him. Tried to get going forward and put some decent crosses into the area, but that stopped when they went down to 10 men.
Was not convincing in his battle with Steven Fletcher, he gave as good as he got in the air and won some crucial headers. On the ground he was a bit more suspect and could not cope with the movement of the Scot.
Made a great block on the line to stop Larsson's free kick creeping in. Tried to pick up Sessegnon when the Benin international dropped off the front and coped OK with that task in the first half but after the break he seemed to struggle with his pace and movement.
Had a quiet if unspectacular game. He defended stoutly down the left as he and Beausejour often doubled up on Adam Johnson. Sunderland targeted him in the air but he seemed to cope with that task without problem.
Showed glimpses of his ability but struggled at times to shield his back four. His passing was fine but often had to drop back to his defenders as he was pressured by the Sunderland midfield. Not his best game.
Tidy and tenacious. His passing was accurate in the middle of the park and he often made dangerous runs into the Sunderland half. He was not shy tackling either as he enjoyed a good battle against Colback.
Anonymous for most of the game. He did not really get to grips with the pace at all and was replaced in the second half by Di Santo, poor performance from the Scot.
Was a danger down the left as he gave Gardner a few problems with his pace. He put a lovely ball into the area for Kone which he should have scored from. His role became more defensive as the game wore on as he tracked back to stop Gardner pushing forward.
Had a good first half as he was often on the ball and looked dangerous in the final third. Did well to rob Colback of the ball but was denied a goal by a great stop from Mignolet. Ruined his display as he was sent off for a reckless challenge on Rose.
Should have given his side the lead in the first half but was denied by a great save from Mignolet. He was always busy and on the move but his effect lessened as the game wore on and his service became sparse.
