Was tested early on by plenty of speculative shots which he would be expected to save. Had no chance for the equalizer and his best work came from collecting crosses to take the pressure off his defense.
Took turns with Brown in dealing with the attacking threat of Carroll but did so impressively, in particular with crosses into the box. Seemed content to sit back and soak up the pressure.
Should have gone out and pressed Downing more for the equalizer as the ball eventually deflected off him before going in. Was pretty solid for the most part, though.
Excellently continued to spot the threat of Carroll, particularly from set pieces as he was always in the right place at the right time to clear the danger away.
Had a good start to the match in which he looked dangerous going forward on the overlap. Drifted out thereafter and seemed susceptible when West Ham counterattacked.
Gave the home side the lead with a well-taken penalty and was effective in getting into dangerous pockets in front of the West Ham defense. Put a couple of great balls into the box that were wasted by teammates.
Saw plenty of the ball throughout the match but was a little too safe in possession. Went for the square pass too often but defensive work was impressive as he intercepted quite a few West Ham counters.
Twisting and turning runs in and around the penalty area were a threat for the majority of the match, which is how he won the penalty in the first period, albeit with not much contact in the tackle by Tomkins.
Left a couple of boots in on Carroll early doors but never really continued with his intense pressing game. Passing was pretty neat and tidy in central areas as he never really ventured forward.
Link-up play with Altidore wasn't really there which meant he was pretty isolated in out wide. Build-up play was decent but never really posed much of a threat when he got into the danger area despite testing Adrian late on.
Hold up play was okay but once again failed to impress as a goalscoring threat. Missed a sitter on the brink of halftime when he failed to sort his feet out and convert from just a few yards out.
Shot-stopping was superb as he pulled off a couple of wonderful saves, in particular from a strike from Wickham that looked destined to find the top corner. Struggled with the ball at his feet at times.
Was up and down that right wing all day long and actually nearly opened the scoring early on when he saw his close-range half volley saved. Provided much needed width on the touchline.
Continually got into advanced positions and linked up well with Sakho whenever the striker drifted out wide. Got some lovely crosses into the box looking for Carroll.
Looked calm and composed in possession at the back and recovered well from a nasty blow to the head to be a real threat inside the box from set pieces, but did earn a yellow for a silly challenge on Altidore.
Was pretty unlucky to give away the penalty in the first half as there didn't appear to be contact with Johnson, but positioning should have been better for it.
Linked up impressively with the rest of the West Ham midfield, in particular with Nolan in the middle of the park. Just never got forward enough to pick out any vital, incisive passes.
Failed to establish any kind of dominance of the ball in central areas and although he screened the area in front of the defense pretty well, could have utilized possession better.
Probably didn't get forward as much as he would have liked to link up with the strikers but still provided a veteran head on the ball. Earned an assist for the equalizer.
Pace was a weapon throughout the match as he regularly instigated a number of West Ham counterattacks. Grabbed the equalizer with a deflected strike into the bottom left corner.
Tested the gloves of the keeper early on with a few speculative strikes and seemed hungry to get on the end of crosses, but never really got a good connection on his headers. Was a massive help defensively from set pieces.
Decision-making could have been a little better when on the ball as on a couple of occasions he went for a shot rather than a pass. Didn't get in behind the deep Sunderland defense enough to hurt them.
