Premier League Preview: Sunderland - West Brom

Steve Clarke's men will be looking to continue their outstanding form with a win over a struggling Black Cats side at the Stadium of Light in Saturday's early kickoff.

Sunderland, fresh off the back of their first away win of the season at Fulham last time out, has very few injury worries with only long-term absentee Wes Brown (knee) unavailable. James McFadden (hamstring) is likely to miss out, but midfielder Craig Gardner returns from suspension after missing the win at Craven Cottage.

West Brom come into the game buoyant after its 2-1 victory of European champion Chelsea last time out, but it will have to do without first choice goalkeeper Ben Foster (groin) once again, with Boaz Myhill set to deputize for the third consecutive game.

Influential midfielder Youssuf Mulumbu (hamstring) is also out, but may be fit in time for their meeting with Swansea on Wednesday night.

Better news, however, is the return to fitness of Northern Irish defender Gareth McAuley (hamstring) after he missed his first game of the season in their previous game while Romelu Lukaku is also available being ineligible against his parent club.

  • Sunderland will be hoping it can get the business done early on in Saturday's match, as its record of scoring late in games is woeful this season. A Demba Ba own goal aside, no Black Cats player has scored any later than the 70th minute in a league game so far.
  • Martin O'Neill's men have managed just one win in their last eight at the Stadium of Light - that being a 1-0 victory over Wigan at the end of September.
  • Sunderland currently lies 16th in the Premier League, but you have to wonder where they would be without striker Steven Fletcher (right). The former Wolves man has scored six of the Black Cats' goals, although they have only managed a paltry 10 altogether.
  • After West Brom defeated Southampton, Wigan and Chelsea in consecutive league games, the Baggies are now chasing a fourth Premier League win on the bounce. If they claim all three points on Wearside it would be the first time they have won four on the spin in the the English top-flight since 1980.
  • Peter Odemwingie is the Baggies joint scorer this season (along with Shane Long - both four), and Sunderland will have to be wary of the Nigerian, as he has netter four times in as many games against the Black Cats.
  • Despite its outstanding start to the season, West Brom's away form is no match for its exceptional record at the Hawthorns. Steve Clarke's men have won just two of their last 11 matches on the road - although they did win last time on their travel at Wigan.
