Made an outrageous one-handed save just before half-time, tipping the ball over the bar after a point blank effort from Knight.
Kept Petrov quiet in the first half and continues to impress at left-back, solid defensively and pushes forward to good effect.
Calm and composed whenever a question was asked of him in the first half and handled Elmander without any issue.
Was finding Davies difficult to deal with before he was taken off early in the first half with an injury after a firm challenge by Davies.
Started out at right-back and was getting some trouble from Taylor early on, but looked more comfortable once he moved infield to play alongside Ferdinand after Mensah's injury.
Committed without possession, put in good challenges to win the ball back for his side but was also neat with the ball at his feet. Drifted out to the left on occasion and this movement confused the Bolton defense. Sent a free-kick in a good position sailing well wide of the target.
Tidy in midfield and got forward to good effect. Maybe picked out the wrong option with a pass to Gyan in the first half when Henderson was free to his right. Lucky to stay on the field after a late challenge on Elmander.
Intelligent dribbling and nice footwork down the right flank, faded slightly after a good start and some of his passing was wayward. Improved in the second half and put some quality passes into the box.
As always, a willing runner into the channels for his side. His touch to control a slightly over hit cross in the buildup to the first goal was excellent.
Adds another dimension to Sunderland's attack with his power and movement. Just as happy to drop off and search for a pass as he is to stretch the defensive line with probing runs. A little too flirtatious with the offside flag and was withdrawn with 20 minutes left to play.
Excellent performance. Good interplay with Bent driving in from the left and was alert to score the opener. A well directed diving header gave his side the lead and continued to look sharp going forward. Wants the ball and very confident in possession, unlucky not to score a second and could have won his side a penalty when he was bundled over in the box.
Had put in a couple of decent stops before Sunderland opened the lead. Maybe could have pushed the ball into a less dangerous area with Bent's initial shot, but made a good effort to get across for the follow up.
Made a good block on a Gyan shot in the first half but was booked for a needless challenge on Bent on the halfway line. It was his header that almost set up Knight for an equalizer at the end of the first half.
Nearly grabbed a goal just before half-time, stabbing the ball goal wards after a knock down by Cahill from a corner. Only a brilliant stop from Gordon denied the defender. Made a timely interception on the edge of his own area as Henderson looked to slot Richardson through on goal.
Uncompromising defender, looks a little off the pace at times but makes up for that with grit and determination. Put in a couple of hefty challenges.
Sunderland looked more threatening down the left flank, with Richardson drifting out wide and Welbeck making runs infield. At times, Ricketts was caught out by this movement.
Struggled to force his way into the game from the right flank in the first half. Continued to look short of ideas in the second half and saw a long distance shot fly high and wide. Had his afternoon ended early by Coyle to round off a turgid day.
Uninspiring from the youngster and was caught ball watching when Sunderland pushed numbers forward from midfield.
Had a good battle with Richardson and Cattermole in the first half, winning the ball high up the field for his side on a couple of occasions. Was brought off in the final stages as Coyle opted for a more attacking option.
A threat down the left flank early, but some of his crosses into the box were too close to Gordon. Faded as the game progressed and was hooked late on.
Chances were thin on the ground on the first half and could have done better with a header from distance after a flowing passing move from his side.
A constant pest to the Sunderland backline and combined well with his midfielders, didn't really get a chance in front of goal.
- 22 S. Mignolet
- 12 M. Angeleri
Ahmed El Mohamady
On for Mensah after the Ghanaian picked up a first half injury. Looked a little out of sorts at first, and was sometimes caught in possession but became more assured as the game developed. Provided a good attacking outlet down the right.
- 8 S. Malbranque
- 16 C. Riveros
Introduced to replace Gyan, had a shot that went straight at the keeper and retained possession well. Headed a late chance wide.

- 27 Chung-Yong Lee
On for Taylor as time trickled away for Bolton.
On for Muamba in the final ten minutes as Coyle went for the draw.
- 20 R. Blake
Brought on to replace the disappointing Petrov and added a bit more sharpness dropping deep into midfield. Had an air shot in injury time when he found space just inside the box. Sent the last shot of the game well wide.
