Stuttgart tore Bremen to pieces as they romped to a magnificent six-goal victory at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Die Schwaben took the lead after ten minutes from an attack, which begun after a misplaced pass from Claudio Pizarro gifted the hosts possession. Timo Gebhart sprung forward and he found Ciprian Marica on the edge of the penalty area. From the right-hand side of the box, he fired the ball into the bottom left-hand corner past Tim Wiese.
Bremen were handed a lifeline at the midway point of the opening period when the ball broke loose from Stuttgart 'keeper Sven Ulreich and he blocked off Aaron Hunt to concede a spot-kick. Torsten Frings stepped up from twelve yards but his weak penalty was comfortably stopped by Ulreich, who atoned for his prior indiscretion.
Eight minutes later, Cacau rubbed salt into the Bremen wounds with the home side's second. Excellent work from goalscorer Marica down the right led to a pinpoint ball to his strike-partner who did the rest to double the advantage.
The home side scored a third just before the break when Marica outfoxed Per Mertesacker before finding Timo Gebhart who laid the ball off for Cacau who could not fail to score his second of the afternoon.
Leon Balogun brought down Timo Gebhart just before the hour for the game's second penalty. Tim Wiese then amazingly emulated the feat of opposite number Ulreich as he dived to his right and parried away Cacau's penalty to deny the striker his hat-trick.
A miserable day for Pizarro was capped when he missed an open goal in the 67th minute, a howler ruthlessly punished a minute later when Christian Gentner came inside off the left flank before firing a right-footed shot past Wiese and into the net via the post.
Stuttgart then added a fifth on 73 minutes when Georg Niedermeier stooped to head home Marica's cross into the net, although Tim Wiese got both hands to the ball and did anything but cover himself in glory. Arthur Boka then danced a jig of delight when he scored the sixth late on after he burst through on goal, rounded Wiese and rolled the ball home for just his second Bundesliga goal.
