Couldn't have done much better for any of the goals, although he will be disappointed to have been wrong-footed by Leon Best's scuffed effort for the second.
Tormented by the movement of Newcastle's front four, his lack of pace was exposed and some clumsy challenges gave the visitors some set piece opportunities that were unnecessary.
Substituted off after nineteen minutes with an injury.
Came off injured after 41 minutes. Ba had already made his mark by that point, and the Irish defender hadn't had the best of games.
Surprisingly he seemed to lack the authority and ability of years past. Allied with a yard of pace shortness, he struggled with the all-round package of Demba Ba.
Caused fewer issues than usual with his throw-ins and contributed in little play. Not the best game for the midfielder.
Substituted off once more after an ineffective performance. One promising break, and he pulled the ball in behind his advancing teammates.
Obviously not yet match fit, but covered very well by the Newcastle defense and midfield so that he couldn't get the dangerous crosses in for Crouch and co.
Had little opportunity to contribute going forward and defensively was a bystander for all three goals. Will have been hoping for better positions with the ball at his feet.
- 25 P. Crouch
Worked hard and scored a penalty, but he couldn't do much to avoid the defeat. Arguably the Potters' best player.
No chance with the penalty but did fairly well under aerial bombardment from the home side. A couple of punches were less than solid in their connection but an assured performance from the Dutchman.
Dealt brilliantly with the the threat of Jermaine Pennant, not allowing him to provide the ammunition to a potent Stoke City forward line. Also took some serious blows and carried on, he will count the bruises as victory scars.
Up against a considerable opponent in Matthew Etherington but saw him off well up until he was replaced. Walters shifted out wide to provide the former Manchester United full back with a different type of threat but he gave him little also. Very solid.
Considering he played with a broken nose, he wouldn't have been looking forward to coming up against the likes of Jones and Crouch but he was courageous and didn't put a foot wrong all night in the face of strong opposition.
Assured, brave and intelligent defending from the Argentine who is at the heart of the best defense in the league. Distribution was effective under the pressure of Jonathan Walters and the other Stoke City forwards.
