He didn’t have much to deal with in the opening half as Manchester City looked nervous in front of goal. He could have done better with Yaya Toure's equalizer but the slight deflection off Shawcross made it difficult for him.
The center half was strong in the air against Dzeko and won the majority of the balls aimed towards the Bosnian, however, when the ball was not played in the air he had to remain patient and did well
Stoke’s captain had a strong game alongside Huth and together they kept control of Dzeko and generally dealt with the threat of David Silva well.
The movement of the City attacking midfield three meant he had to be alert at all times and he also had the overlapping Gael Clichy to contend with. Looked to get forward whenever he could.
He did alright against the three attacking midfielders for City but they did have the majority of their success down the right flank against Wilson.
Playing in central midfield against Manchester City is always going to be difficult and Whelan found himself doing a lot of chasing trying to win the ball back as the visitors dominated.
Fought hard alongside Whelan but struggled to do anything more than break up Manchester City attacks and was not able to provide much support going forward. Lucky to stay on the pitch in the first half as he struck David Silva with his arm but referee Howard Webb chose to keep his cards in his pockets.
Has pace to burn and that worried Zabaleta at times although the winger struggled to deliver much towards Crouch in the middle. He was replaced by Palacios late in the second half.
Something of a talisman for the Potters, Walters was busy in and around Crouch to pick up loose balls and create chances for his team mates.
Led the line well against the Manchester City defense and held the ball up when it was played to him out of defense, looking to turn and run at the visitors defense when he could. Chances in front of goal were limited but he brought the game to life with a truly sensational volley from 20 yards that deserves to be goal of the season. Replaced in injury time and given a standing ovation, rightly so.
Had the opportunity to use the ball better than he did at times when in attacking situations. He never really made an impression on the game as the City midfield and defense dominated, and he was replaced by Pennant in the 51st minute.
Dealt with the multiple crosses into his penalty area well and organized his defense with authority but in truth he was hardly tested by the Stoke attack. When the ball did get past him as Shawcross flicked an Etherington corner towards goal he was rescued by Zabaleta’s goal line clearance. There was nothing he could have done with Crouch’s wonder strike as it sailed over his head and into the back of the net.
Strong in the challenge and was able to stay close to Etherington and deny the winger the chance to cross into the area. Missed two great chances in the first half but made a fantastic goal line clearance in the closing minutes of the half from a right wing corner. Was replaced by Milner late on.
Challenged Crouch for every ball and although he didn’t win every one he made sure that the striker didn’t get past him to fire shots at Hart.
Looks very comfortable at center half and worked well alongside Kolo Toure to challenge Crouch and keep the striker away from goal. Showed composure on the ball which to bring it out of defense and set his side on its way, something that the visitors really benefited from.
Defensively he had a busy evening against the lively Walters but more often than not he was able to keep the Stoke man under control. Clichy was also very dangerous going forward and created some excellent chances for Dzeko which weren’t converted.
The Spaniard definitely makes City tick and the vision he has enables him to open up defenses at will even when the opposition thought it had him under control. Replaced by Johnson
Drifted in and out of the game but did threaten when given the opportunity. Played predominantly on the left and linked up very nicely with Clichy, he also delivered some dangerous crosses that were not converted. Brought a good save out of Begovic in the opening minutes of the second half with a low drive.
Could be the complete midfielder. Able to sit in front of his defense as a protector but also able to break forward and threaten the opposition's goal. He proved his worth to his side with a stunning equalizer from long range that was too hot for Begovic.
In complete control in the middle of the pitch, picking up the loose balls in front of his defense and recycling the ball to set the visitors on their way again. Replaced by Tevez with 15 minutes to go.
Led the line well and gave City a good focal point in its attacks but his finishing really let him down as he wasted two good headed opportunities in the first half.
His link up play could have been better and his movement off the ball isn’t always what his side need from him, but when he has the ball at his feet he is a real threat. On a couple of occasions he was able to wriggle through the Stoke defense but his shots lacked power and Sorensen saved easily.

- 20 M. Upson
- 24 R. Delap
On for Jerome in the 51st minute and delivered the ball to Crouch for the opening goal, although the winger could not have known what the striker was going to do.
Replaced Etherington in the second half as the winger tired, he struggled to get make much of an impact on the game. Had a great opportunity to win the game but his long range shot was well over Hart's crossbar.
Replaced Crouch in injury time.
- 30 C. Pantilimon
- 15 S. Savić
- 13 A. Kolarov
Replaced Zabaleta late on after the Argentine began to struggle with cramp.
- 34 N. de Jong
Replaced Silva in the 63rd minute to try and give the visitors some more width. Got himself into good positions but never really put the ball in a dangerous areas.
Replaced Barry in the 74th minute and looked good in possession and eager to have the ball but he couldn't find the pass to unlock the Stoke defense.
