A coaching change hasn't affected the results - not yet anyway. Toronto lost 2-0 to Sporting in Kansas City. The Paul Mariner era failed to distinguish itself from the Aron Winter era at Toronto FC in the first matchday after a brief international break. TFC fell 2-0 to Sporting Kansas City, which rode a pair of first half volleyed goals to the win.
Toronto may have a new coach in the recently-appointed Mariner, but the defending looked similar to the mushy marking that characterized the previous regime. A Jacob Peterson -- himself a former Red -- cross bounced past four red shirts before Sapong obliged and slammed it into the billowing net to open the scoring.
The second goal had a similar feel. Julio Cesar approached unmarked at the far post on a Graham Zusi corner and one-timed a vehement volley home. The assist moved Zusi into the MLS joint-lead on eight.
Between Sporting's goals Eric Avila's shot bounced off both posts before coming back out. But it wasn't enough, and the Canadians trudge back to Toronto without any points in tow.
