Peter Vermes' club dominated its Honduran opponent and, despite settling for the draw at home, did enough to win Group 2.
Needing just a tie to win Group 2, Kansas City (2-0-2) played to a 0-0 draw with Honduras' CD Olimpia (2-1-1) at Sporting Park. By topping the three-team group, Kansas City secured passage to next spring's knockout stage.
The MLS side controlled the match from beginning to end, seizing nearly 70 percent of the possession. Kansas City came close to taking the lead in the 29th minute, but Olimpia goalkeeper Noel Valladares got down to deny Jacob Peterson's header with a fine save.
Sporting thought it had gotten that elusive goal nine minutes after halftime when Graham Zusi put the ball in the back of the net. But the strike was called back on a tight offside call.
