Sporting Kansas City 2-0 Columbus Crew: Champs go top of the Eastern Conference

A goal on either side of the half helped the home side overcome the Crew, who are now winless in five games

Sporting Kansas City went back to the top of the Eastern Conference after a 2-0 win over the Columbus Crew at Sporting Park on Sunday afternoon.

The home side got on the board within 10 minutes of the opening whistle. Chance Myers got a low cross off from the right flank and Paulo Nagamura’s shot was blocked. After a scramble, the ball fell to Jacob Peterson, who finished from close range.

The Crew would have equalized 31 minutes in, but Eric Kronberg produced an outstanding save to deny a low Bernardo Anor header off the line.

As Columbus looked to get back into the match, Wil Trapp tackled Benny Feilhaber from behind with 10 minutes to play, earning a second yellow card and leaving his team down a man.

As the clock ticked down, a Michael Parkhurst mistake allowed Graham Zusi to collect the ball and chip a great ball across the box to Claudio Bieler, who was left with a tap-in to seal the game.
