Made a fine early save from Sessegnon, and an easier one from Larsson late on. Had no chance with the opening goal. Nearly let a long-range free kick slip through his hands, though.
Was good against McClean for the most part and assured on ball. However, some slack marking allowed the cross before Fletcher's goal.
Captained his side on his 29th birthday and dealt well with Fletcher mostly. Unfortunate slice gave them little chance with goal. Nearly netted an equaliser when heading just wide from De Ridder's corner.
Played the ball out of the back well and made a brilliant tackle to deny Fletcher getting on the end of cross - which hurt him in the process. Again, hard luck with goal but might have been tighter.
Was a little nervy on the ball and displayed some poor passing going forward. Solid at the back for the most part. Bit better on the front foot in the second half, though.
Wasted a good early chance and was generally quite sloppy. Not as sharp as normal and could have covered better for Fletcher's goal. Replaced by Do Prado late on.
Gave good cover to his defence when they went forward and broke up play consistently. Bit sloppy at the other end.
Saw a few decent strikes saved or fly just wide and offered creativity. Was dangerous on the ball but didn't get it enough. Late chance blocked by Campbell. Showed intermittent quality but certainly lacked the fight and desire that absent-captain Lallana gives the side.
Broke up numerous Sunderland attacks with plenty of fine tackles. Some searching balls as Saints attacked, too. Was replaced just before the hour mark.
Lively and won a few free kicks. His pace worried Sunderland's back-line but he looked a bit hesitant when in good positions. Maybe short of confidence that comes with game time. Brought off just after the break.
Went close with a free kick and a strike just after the break. Held up the ball well at times but met his match in O'Shea and Cuellar.
Good under the high ball and made a decent save from Ramirez. Little else to do throughout the game.
Did well ageist the aerial threat of Lambert and managed to deal with the pace of Mayuka too. Will be happy with an important clean sheet away from home.
Good going forward and found Sessegnon with neat ball for opening chance. Defended well too.
Was physical when up against Lambert, and made one fantastic tackle in particular to stop him strolling through. Solid clean sheet.
Made some poor touches and was quite wasteful when Sunderland needed to hold on to the ball in the first half.
Gave away some clumsy fouls, but with the ball looked dangerous when he wanted to. Fierce cross led to Fletcher's goal and created a good chance for himself with some neat work just after the break. Forced off with 15 minutes left.
Nearly opened the scoring with a fine strike very early on. Set-up Fletcher's goal somewhat fortunately with a sliced effort of his own. Lively all round performance. Brought off very late on.
A good ball in nearly gave Fletcher a goal, but he was denied by Yoshida. Didn't get forward all that much, though. Good defensively.
Tested Davis with decent effort after a quick corner. Received a stupid booking for arguing with the referee, though. Replaced with about 20 minutes left.
Had space in the middle, with Saints' central midfielders sitting deep, however didn't really utilise it. Sat well though and broke up attacks.
Flicked one chance just wide as he had little impact in the first half, until his clinical, instinctive finish for the goal.
Replaced Schneiderlin just before the hour.
S. De Ridder
Came on for Mayuka early in the second period. His corner was nearly turned in by Fonte. Offered a few other dangerous deliveries and was generally lively.
Thrown on for Puncheon late on, and could have scored an equaliser.
