Looked comfortable under the high ball and saved well from Bent just after the break. Maybe could have had more command over his box for the goal.
Looked solid at left back, but maybe gave Lowton too much respect as he came forward. Replaced at halftime.
Was very comfortable at center back, both in the air and on the ground. Wasn't afraid to bark orders at those in front when they gave it away and was composed when playing it out from the back.
Made a brilliant recovery tackle on Bent after sloppy play from his midfielders, and also slid in to make a vital block on Lichaj's cross. Could have done better for Bent's goal, though.
Failed to get into the game in the first half, and gave the ball away in the lead-up to Bent's goal. Switched to left back at halftime, and took his goal well.
Played some sloppy passes in Saints' poor spell in the latter stages of the first half. Improved in the second when things were going well for Saints.
Got into numerous good positions but often wasted the final ball. However, took his goal incredibly coolly with his weaker foot, and went close just before that.
Some flashes of brilliance, including the flick to set up Clyne's goal, but perhaps not quite enough for a £12 million signing. He is still adapting to the Premier League pace, though, and grew into the game in the second half.
Sometimes looked too slow on the ball when deep, shot wide with a decent opening early on. Always hard working though, replaced late on.
Looked so dangerous when running with the ball, and his determination to win it back was also superb. Could have made another goal late on but wasted the chance.
Looked a bit off the pace in the first-half, but took his goal very well with a brilliant touch and powerful finish. Made no mistake from the spot, too.
Very quiet first-half and couldn't do anything about any of the goals. Needlessly gave away the penalty in the last minute.
Was booked for a trip on Lambert, looked solid in the first half but couldn't deal with the fluidity in the second.
Won his battle in the air with Lambert in the first half, but was part of a defense that crumbled after the break.
Got forward well against Fox in the first half, was forced back more in the second as Saints dominated.
Unfortunate to see his cross blocked by Fonte when in a good position. Replaced by Bennett.
Delivered some dangerous crosses and was a threat when Villa was on the front foot. Replaced late in the second half.
Was decent in the first half but, after losing Ireland, was part of a midfield that was played out of the game in the second.
K. El Ahmadi
Grew into the first half but wasn't tight enough in the second as Saints poured forward.
Showed some nice touches and played the ball in for Villa's goal, but replaced at halftime by Westwood.
Set up Bent's goal with a nice nod down, and nearly scored himself. Looked Villa's most dangerous man. Good full debut.
Instinctively took his goal, and was a threat in behind. However, he was poor at holding the ball up when Villa needed him to.
