  • ..and that's all she wrote. The Earthquakes couldn't muster an offensive effort and go down 1-0. They will have to win in New York to have a hope of advancing, but they are one of the best road teams in MLS, so there is still hope for Frank Yallop's charges. They will need to seriously raise their game, though, if they are to get to the conference finals.

  • A side note, all the playoff teams will be playing in international competition next year. The two MLS Cup finalists will join Los Angeles (Supporters' Shield) and Seattle (US Open Cup winners) in the CONCACAF Champions League. This means one of New York, Colorado, Columbus and San Jose will play in next year's CCL. If Los Angeles or Seattle makes it to the final, Real Salt Lake would qualify as Supporters' Shield runners-up. The remaining four teams will play in the SuperLiga.
  • Halftime here at Buck Shaw, 0-0 is the score. It's been a pretty slow-paced game so far, but not without chances for either side. Busch made two great saves early on and Jason Hernandez had a great reaction save to deny Lindpere with the half winding down. Despite a physical match, the only card so far was issued to Mehdi Ballouchy for dissent.

  • The referee tonight is Paul Ward, assisted by Joe Fletcher and Corey Rockwell. The fourth official is Baldomero Toledo.
  • These teams split the season series. San Jose laid a 4-0 thumping on New York at Buck Shaw in May, with some help from an early red card to Luke Sassano. New York took the return game at Red Bull Arena 2-0 thanks to a solo effort for Dane Richards and Thierry Henry's first MLS goal.
  • Nick Rosano here at Buck Shaw, awaiting kickoff as the teams come on to the field. The 17 year old Juan Agudelo gets a surprise start for Red Bulls, while Scott Sealy replaces Khari Stephenson in the attacking midfield role for the Earthquakes. No other surprises, though Ramiro Corrales gets the start at left back for San Jose with Tim Ward flipping over to the right side and Chris Leitch on the bench.
