Sevilla 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Salvio and Diawara on target as European hopefuls share the points

Neither side showed enough endeavor to claim all three points as both teams remain in mid-table with their Champions League qualification hopes suffering another blow.

An Eduardo Salvio header and a Baba Diawara strike in the first half were the only goals of the match as Sevilla and Atletico Madrid played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday evening.

The visiting side silenced the vibrant home support in the eighth minute through a goal by Salvio. Atleti nicked possession off its opponent in the final third and the ball found its way to Adrian, who whipped in a cross from the left to the center of the Sevilla box and the Argentine was there to glance a header into the far corner.

Salvio was at the heart of all of Atletico's more dangerous plays, and had a further two chances to double his tally in the first half. The 21-year old tested Andres Palop with a well-controlled half volley from 12 yards and a wonderful curled effort from the edge of the box but both were expertly saved by the Sevilla goalkeeper.

Atletico looked the team more likely to grab the second goal of the match in the first half but Sevilla was not devoid of chances itself. Jose Antonio Reyes came close to scoring against the club he left in January with a lashed volley across goal that went just by the post.

Frederic Kanoute also came within inches of grabbing an equalizer with a bullet header towards the near post seconds before the end of the first half, but his attempt flashed wide.

Sevilla came out of the blocks quickly in the second period and found itself level through a well-worked goal seven minutes after the restart. Jesus Navas showed tremendous vision down the right side to slide a perfectly weighted pass across goal, and Diawara was on hand to lash the ball into the bottom corner.

Navas was causing all sorts of problems down the right flank and almost set up his side's second goal 20 minutes from time. The pacey winger hit the byline before standing up a cross to the back post for Reyes, whose header at goal was well saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Sevilla thought it had claimed a very late victory in the last minute when Navas picked out Manu at the back post and the substitute slid the ball over the line. However, the celebrations were stopped when the linesman flagged the goal as offside.

The result left Sevilla and Atletico Madrid level on 33 points in 11th and 10th respectively, four points behind Malaga which currently occupies the fourth Champions League spot.
