Real Sociedad 1-2 Valencia: Aritz Aduriz The Hero As Los Che Finish 2010 In Champions League Spots

A controversial penalty decision led to the opener for Real Sociedad...

Valencia secured a late come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga at the Estadio Anoeta.

Xabi Prieto put the Txuri-urdin ahead from the penalty spot before a rasping Tino Costa free-kick restored parity just before half-time. Then Aritz Aduriz won the match for Los Che with an excellent solo goal in injury time at the end of the game.

The away side started the game on the front foot, having a number of early chances, with Juan Mata going close, then moments later Ricardo Costa missed a guilt-edged chance after a Joaquin free-kick was spilled into his path. However, Costa blasted over from close range.

The home side defended well and were very organized, while hitting Valencia on the break to great effect. It wasn't long before the Txuri-urdin were in front, though, in rather controversial circumstances.

David Navarro was penalized for what looked to have been a fair aerial challenge with David Zurutuza. Still, the referee awarded a penalty. Xabi Prieto, cool as ice, put the spot kick straight down the middle to give La Real the lead.

Real Sociedad took heart from the goal and almost grabbed a second when Antoine Griezmann went close from a free-kick but Cesar in the Valencia goal pulled off a stunning save to deny the midfielder.

Valencia worked hard and on the stroke of half-time, Tino Costa scored an astonishing free-kick to bring his side level. He struck the ball with such power it flew into the far top corner like a bullet. Claudio Bravo had no chance.

The second period began at a frenetic pace, with both teams looking to get their noses in front. Valencia, though, suffered a blow when Cesar was taken off early in the half, he had been struggling after an accidental collision during the first period. He was replaced by third choice goalkeeper Guaita.

Clearly buoyed by this, the Basque outfit stepped up a gear and played some excellent football with Zurutuza going close, only for his shot to be blocked by a Ricardo Costa header. Moments later Zurutuza found himself in another good position but his shot from inside the penalty area was deflected wide.

Towards the end of the match, Los Che did have a few opportunities, but they lacked that final ball that would have unlocked a very stubborn defense.

It took a moment of magic and in injury time Aduriz took advantage of a poor clearance by the goalkeeper before making his way back into the box. He fired past Bravo to give Los Che all three points to move them up to fourth place while Real Sociedad stay put in ninth before Sunday's round of games.
