Real Sociedad 1-0 Espanyol: Juan Forlin Own Goal Sinks Mauricio Pochettino's Men

Visitors' impressive defensive play stumbles in the dying minutes of the game.

Real Sociedad recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win against Espanyol in a fiery game at Anoeta. Despite defending valiantly for most of the game, a goal for the hosts eventually came in the second half when Juan Forlin put one in his own net.

The hosts started the game brightly and could have open the scoring as early as the 13th minute. Carlos Martinez whipped in a delightful cross for Raul Tamudo in the center of the box, but the striker's header was saved in the bottom left corner by Carlos Kameni.

Three minutes later it was the visitors who wasted a great chance to go in front after a short period of dominance. Pablo Osvaldo was picked out by Luis Garcia with a precise cross in the centre of the box, but the ex-Bologna man saw his bottom left corner-bound finish saved by Claudio Bravo.

Real managed to seize control of the game and dominated in the remaining minutes of the first half, but could not create any clear-cut chances. Espanyol's cause was not helped by the fact that Ernesto Galan had to be replaced in the 32nd minute after picking up an injury in his efforts to stop Antoine Griezmann on the left wing.

Griezmann, who was arguably the best player in first half, was in the centre of the first real opportunity for either side. Four minutes into the second period the young winger crossed from a set-piece on the left in the box, but Jon Ansotegui failed to head the ball past Kameni, despite having enough time and space to do so.

Aldo Duscher missed Espanyol's best chance of the game 27 minutes later, when he saw his header from point-blank range impressively blocked by Claudio Bravo. The opening goal finally game in the 85th minute when Juan Forlin scored a rather unfortunate own goal as

Jeffrey Sarpong smashed the ball against the near post from a direct free-kick on the left, before the ball rebounded off the defender and into the net.

Alvaro Vasquez had a chance to draw the game deep in injury time, but was denied by Bravo at the left post as the game ended with the score 1-0.

The win sees La Real climb to 15th in the standings, while Espanyol retain their 6th place for now until Sunday's round of matches.
