Was beaten all ends up by Castro's early free kick and had his woodwork to thank for keeping the ball out. Produced a couple of stunning saves to keep out Kiessling but was given very little chance when Toprak was allowed to poke home from a few yards out.
For a player making his Champions League debut, the left back showed no fear and was one of his side's main threats in the first period. Faded second half, possibly because of fatigue.
The captain was exposed by Kiessling in the air too many times as the Bayer striker threatened the Sociedad goal relentlessly. Almost spoiled the German party with his late header but could only find the side netting.
Wasn't happy with the booking he picked up at the end of the first half as he brought down Rolfes. Didn't cope well with Bayer's pace on the counter, often leaving space to be exploited. Subbed for Gaztanaga as the hosts looked for a bit more in attack.
Struggled in the air with Kiessling's power and was often out-muscled as the German got the better of him. Produces some important pieces of defending to limit the damage, most notably to keep Son at bay but lost his head towards the end, almost picking a fight with Castro.
Made sure Leno was on his toes from the early minutes with a deep cross that the keeper had to punch away. Was a constant threat to the Leverkusen goal and almost gave his side an equalizer with a half-volley that produced another great stop from Leno.
Withdrawn early in the second period as the hosts failed to cope with Bayer's dominance in midfield. Let Bender and Rolfes drift forward without any attention, allowing them a great deal of space for efforts on goal.
Booked just before the break as Can threatened to lead a counter attack for the visitors. The Sociedad midfield didn't look up to much until the arrival of Xabi Prieto, his introduction leading to more dynamism from Markel in the middle.
Targeted by Leverkusen's midfield as he was hacked down by both Rolfes and Bender as they earned yellow cards. Came mightily close at the end as he slid in but failed to make contact with Griezmann's delivery.
Constantly troubling Bayer's back four and had Hyypia grimacing as he threatened to undo the German side's defense repeatedly. For all his chances though, his finishing was poor as he never really drew a top class save from the keeper.
Didn't provide much of a threat at all in a stale performance. Couldn't really point to a lack of support as Vela and Griezmann buzzed around him. Had one effort of note that was blocked by Donati but a frustrating evening for the target man.
Kept on his toes all night by the likes of Griezmann but was only really stretched into an impressive save once as he tipped over from Pardo before watching Ansotegi head wide late.
Agirretxe didn't prove much of a threat but could largely be put down to the attention given to him by Spahic as the Bayer defense dealt with most of the threat that came through the middle of the park.
Sturdy at the back as the visitors kept an invaluable clean sheet. Undoubtedly his biggest contribution was picking up the ball from Kruse's corner and stabbing it beyond Zubikarai to ensure Bayer's passage into the knockout stages.
Given a tough time by Griezmann as the Frenchman posed a constant nuisance. Made some telling contributions in defense, getting his head in the way of a shot when it was going to be painful, and blocking Agirretxe effort late on.
Smacked the post early on with a fantastic free kick that had Zubikarai well beaten. Delivered a host of dangerous set pieces and crosses from the right and was unlucky with a couple of other efforts in what was a polished performance.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder took up the role of left back, and although not his usual position he more than held his own. Showed his true abilities lie further up the pitch as he got forward more often than not. Hacked down for his troubles late on by Gaztanaga and Ansotegi.
Attempted to get forward early on to aid Rolfes as Hyypia's side pushed for an early goal. Dragged a shot wide when well positioned and was one of the midfielders who happily ganged up on Vela to keep the Mexican quiet.
The South Korean worked tirelessly but didn't have the composure to pull off the all important final ball on too many occasions. Wasted numerous chances, most notably at the end when clean through and didn't even get his shot away.
Largely ineffective in a first half where Bayer struggled to get any width. Was in the right areas at times, looking to prey on any loose balls or spills from Zubikarai, but they never came. Substituted at the beginning of the second period.
An influential figure as Leverkusen attempted to play through him in the opening period, but with little success. Missed a golden opportunity to put his side ahead when he headed over. One of several who got booked for chopping down Vela.
Another who worked hard, but the striker always looked a lot more threatening than Son. Constantly winning aerial battles, he was denied on a couple of occasions by stunning Zubikarai saves. Knew it wasn't his night when the upright came to Sociedad's rescue.
