Nat Borchers scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for RSL, his header helping left the club into third place in the Western Conference.Sporting Kansas City missed out on a chance to go top in the Eastern Conference by dropping a 1-0 result to Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
Nat Borchers grabbed the only goal of the game in the 54th minute. His header from a Kyle Beckerman free kick helped RSL overcome an 11-5 shot deficit to grab all three points in a very entertaining match.
Nick Rimando pulled off a clutch of saves to preserve his 12th shutout of the season.
"I believe that this team can win in multiple ways," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "I think it sends a message to the rest of the league that if a brawl is going to break out and it's going to be a wrestling match, well, we can win that way too."
The win, coupled with another loss for FC Dallas, moves RSL into third place in the tough Western Conference and puts the club in a strong position for the final playoff push. Sporting KC remains second in the East.
"Credit to Real, a good team," Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said. "I'm sure that if we keep playing the way we are, we will meet in the playoffs at some point."
