A messy match included an incorrect card and ended with Jason Kreis chasing Jon Busch down the tunnel. The three points reside with RSL, though.Any weight to Real Salt Lake's heavy win over the San Jose Earthquakes was undermined by Alvaro Saborio's dive. Only the referee was fooled, but he's the one who counts, and the flop resulted in an ejection for San Jose and a penalty for RSL.
Nana Attakora picked a poor game to make his 'Quakes debut, earning the nod when fitness made captain Jason Hernandez a late scratch. Near the end of first half, the Canadian took a bad touch and Jon Busch had to bail him out by smothering Fabian Espindola's shot. To start the second half, Espindola raced past the poorly placed Attakora again, with Busch deflecting the shot at the near post.
Still, the sides looked equally balanced.
The turning point came at the hour mark. Alvaro Sabario, cutting between Bobby Burling and Brad Ring, took a ridiculous dive. The referee showed Ring a red card, but after consulting with his assistant, ejected Burling instead. Perhaps if he had changed his mind once more he would have landed on the proper decision – a yellow for simulation to the Costa Rican.
Sabario dispatched the penalty kick to put the host side ahead. RSL made the extra man count, with both Sabario and Kyle Beckerman cleaning up blocked shots to bring the gap to three. Jamison Olave made it a rout with a headed goal to complete the scoring.
