Espindola and Gil provided the goals in a routine win over New York in the gusty Utah winds for RSL.Real Salt Lake has now beaten the two team with the highest payrolls in MLS. Following last week's come-from-behind win over the LA Galaxy, RSL returned to Utah and easily dispatched the New York Red Bulls, 2-0.
Hans Backe made several changes to his staring lineup following a season-opening defeat to FC Dallas. They didn't pay off. The Red Bulls struggled to pass the ball accurately and Thierry Henry, playing higher than usual without a traditional striking partner, was uninterested in chasing balls over the top.
Fabian Espindola had no such qualms. A chip from Paulo Jr. caught the New York defensive line stranded up near the halfway line with Roy Miller keeping Espindola onside. The Argentine striker zipped in on goal and slotted a shot between Ryan Meara's legs.
Luis Gil finished off the match and the scoring in the second half. Sebastian Velasquez buzzed down the left and found Espindola, whose poked shot bounced off Meara. Gil calmly cleaned up the rebound.
Near the end of the match, Northern Ireland native Johnny Steele made his MLS debut on St. Patrick's Day.
