Real Salt Lake beat expansion side Montreal 1-0 thanks to a first-half penalty to come up with three midweek points. The Montreal Impact continues to search for their first win in Major League Soccer after a penalty from Paulo Jr. handed Real Salt Lake a 1-0 win in a sold-out Rio Tinto Stadium on Wednesday night.
The only goal came early in the match. A header from a corner struck Justin Braun on the arm. The Utah native protested, but referee Ricardo Salazar awarded the penalty. Paulo Jr. slotted past Donovan Ricketts.
Ricketts went on to make three smart saves to keep Montreal within touching distance, but RSL saw out the game fairly comfortably, despite Ned Grabavoy playing the final 20 minutes with a suspected broken rib.
Both teams face rivals this weekend. Montreal takes on fellow Canadian club Toronto FC, also winless in the 2012 MLS season, on Sunday, and RSL plays the Colorado Rapids in the Rocky Mountain Cup Saturday.
