A largely reserve Galaxy side snatched a 2-0 win in Utah, wrestling sole control of second in the West away from RSL.LA Galaxy beat Real Salt Lake, 2-0, to stay second in the Western Conference. RSL dropped to fourth in the West.
The Galaxy traveled to Utah without four of its most senior players. Carlo Cudicini, Landon Donovan, Todd Dunivant (leg strains) and Robbie Keane (ankle strain) missed out, so Brian Rowe, in goal, and Charlie Rugg made their MLS debuts.
In the sixth minute, Mike Magee, wearing the captain's armband for the day, nipped into the shadow of Omar Gonzalez's jump and headed home Juninho's free kick. Magee is tied with Jack McInerney with six goals this season.
Before the quarter hour mark, Rugg doubled the lead with his first professional goal. Hector Jimenez squirted a low cross in front of goal and Rugg smashed it past Nick Rimando from point-blank range.
In the second half Jack McBean went off with a shoulder injury, so replacement Gyasi Zardes made it three MLS debutants for Los Angeles.
