Reading manager Brian McDermott has a few selection issues having rotated his team for the League Cup victory over QPR in his week from the team that is currently winless in the league

Alex McCarthy looks set to continue in goal while Jimmy Kebe could be set for his first Premier League start of the season having recovered from injury. Hal Robson-Kanu could come into the front three after some impressive cameos off the bench.

Newcastle looks set to revert to more or less the side that beat Norwich last weekend 1-0 after making a raft of changes for its midweek defeat to Manchester United in the League Cup.

Fabricio Coloccini and Cheikh Tiote made returns from injury at Old Trafford and both should keep their places in the side at the Madejeski Stadium.

Elsewhere, Tim Krul could return from the arm injury that has sidelined him since the last international break while Danny Simpson may also be fit to be part of the traveling Magpies squad.

  • Reading remains in search of its first Premier League victory this season having played a game less than the rest of the league after its match at Sunderland was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
  • The host has only won two of its last 14 Premier League fixtures, both back in 2008 at home to Birmingham and Derby, its other relegated compatriots that season.
  • Danny Guthrie could line up against his former club where he made 103 appearances and scored 10 goals between 2008-2012.
  • Left back Ian Harte is in search of his first Premier League goal since April 2004 when he struck for Leeds in a home defeat against Portsmouth.
  • The last time these two sides met in the Premier League was in 2008 when Kevin Keegan's Newcastle triumphed 3-0 thanks to goals from Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen and Mark Viduka.
  • Papiss Cisse (pictured right) scored against Manchester United in midweek, his first goal for the club since his double against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on May 2, 2012.
  • Alan Pardew formerly played and managed Reading between 1999 and 2003, where he achieved promotion into the old Division One before leaving the Madejski Stadium to take charge at West Ham.
  • Newcastle is looking for their first away win in all competitions this season, having lost at Chelsea and Manchester United while gaining draws at Everton and Portuguese side Maritimo in the Europa League.
  • Newcastle had the second-worst disciplinary record in the Premier League last season while Reading's record was the second-best in the Championship.
