Portland Timbers 2-1 Vancouver Whitecaps: Rose City wins tussle between expansion clubs

Steve Dykes

Portland claimed the initial meeting of the expansion clubs. The Timbers rode two first-half goals to a 2-1 win over the visiting Whitecaps.

Tom Soehn, with nine points from 13 games, now has a worse record than the man he replaced. Teitur Thordarson earned nine points in 12 matches.

The latest Vancouver Whitecaps defeat came at the hands of a fellow expansion club in the form of the Portland Timbers. The 2-1 win for the host side, the first MLS meeting between these two longtime rivals, underlined the Timbers' superior season, lifting Portland up to 29 points and keeping its slim playoff hopes alive. Vancouver has 18 points, the worst record in MLS.

The Timbers set the tone of the match early when Diego Chara lashed home a bouncing ball in the second minute. Jorge Perlaza toe-poked the second in after a frenzy in the box just after the half-hour mark. And Kenny Cooper had a goal disallowed right before halftime.

Kalif Alhassan clanked an open shot off the upright after Chara set him up early in the second half, but the next goal fell to Vancouver. A leading Jordan Harvey ball found Camilo in the box. The Brazilian spun his marker and then curled a shot into the far corner.

However, with that goal coming in the 88th minute, it was too late to salvage the game, let alone Vancouver's season.
