Chris Wondolowski met an MLS record with his 27th goal of the season, opening the scoring in the draw with Portland. The San Jose Earthquakes and the Portland Timbers drew 1-1 on Saturday in the last round of the MLS regular season.
The opening goal came midway through the first half. Donovan Ricketts found himself outside his box, rushing back to challenge Steven Lenhart. When Ricketts lunged into a tackle, Lenhart dropped to the field to earn a penalty. Chris Wondolowski drilled low and to the left to notch his 27th goal of the season.
The tally equaled Roy Lassiter's MLS record for goals in a year, set in 1996.
The Timbers equalized an hour into the match. Eric Alexander nicked the ball back in the opposition box, and Bright Dike fired first-time with his left foot. Jon Busch blocked the shot, but Dike slotted home with his right from the rebound.
San Jose had wrapped up the Supporters' Shield before the match. The Portland Timbers, which didn't qualify for the playoffs in a disappointing season that saw coach John Spencer replaced, haven't lost to the 'Quakes in three games this year, winning in July and drawing the other two.
