San Jose, boasting the best record in MLS and an impressive comeback pedigree, fell to the Timbers.
The 'Quakes have made a habit of turning games around late, scoring four stoppage-time winners in 2012. However, Portland's two goals held up against the team with the best record in MLS.
Half an hour in, Frank Songo'o raced down the right flank on the counter. His cross was met by a delicate clip in the box by Danny Mwanga. It was Mwanga's first for Portland.
Captain Jack Jewsbury scored his first of the season on the hour mark. David Bingham made a mess of a relatively straightforward set piece, bundling the ball under pressure from Mamadou Danso. Jewsbury slid to tip in the ball right on the goal line.
Alan Gordon scored San Jose's goal. Marvin Chavez slammed a shot into the congested box and Gordon stuck out a toe, redirecting the ball into the net.
But despite six minutes of stoppage time, the equalizer never came for San Jose.
