Portland, in its expansion season, has moved into the final playoff position with only a few short weeks left, thanks to a 3-0 win over New England. The Portland Timbers posted three points and a 15th consecutive sellout of JELD-WEN Field on Friday night when they beat the New England Revolution 3-0.
The Revolution's four-match unbeaten run quickly came to a close in a game which saw A.J. Soares and Rajko Lekic go down injured.
Diego Chara started the scoring early when he initially fumbled but then recovered to cleverly poke a Lovel Palmer cross past Matt Reis in the ninth minute.
Reis was saved by an offside call shortly after, but went into the halftime break having conceded twice. Mike Chabala zipped the ball across the face of goal with the outside of his right foot and Kenny Cooper, who had scored one goal in the previous 20 matches, pushed it over the line.
Palmer thwacked a long-range volley off the base of the post, but the sealing third goal didn't come until the second half. Darlington Nagbe hung in the air and snapped a header inside the far post, as Portland slipped into the final playoff position.
