Portland Timbers 3-2 D.C. United: Timbers finally win

Steve Dykes

Caleb Porter's men finally won a game, needing a Maximiliano Urruti goal in stoppage to overcome D.C. United.

Nine games into the season, and Portland finally has a win. Last year's Western Conference top seed began the year with five draws and three losses, but earned its first victory of 2014 in dramatic fashion, defeating D.C. United 3-2 at home.

Portland scored almost immediately. The Timbers caught United on the break and a Diego Valeri cross came into Gaston Fernandez, who touched the ball over Bill Hamid and acrobatically flicked it into the net, for the fastest Timbers goal in the MLS era.

D.C. equalized in the 21st minute. Davy Arnaud launched a long-range shot that took a touch off Diego Chara and looped over Donovan Ricketts.

The home side was back on top in the 38th. Valeri's corner passed through traffic until Futty Danso applied a sliding finish from the top of the box.

D.C. again put itself on level terms in the 78th minute, when Danso, attempting to defend a corner kick, headed the ball into his own net to make it 2-2.

Urruti scored late in stoppage time to snap the streak, finishing from inside the box.
