Live Commentary

  • That will be all from me today. Hope you enjoyed the game, and if accidentally enjoyed the commentary, follow me on Twitter @streffsoccer. I am just as funny there too!
  • I have been impressed with the Timbers Army. Think most people that saw the game will be as well.
  • Not a great performance from Chicago, but tonight was all about Portland. They finally get all three points, and to do so in front of their vocal home support was the perfect way to do it.
  • Two goals from Perlaza, combined with goals from Futty and Wallace were enough to cancel out Pappa's goal and Brunner's own-goal.
  • 90' + 3'
And that does it! In their first game at Jeld-Wen, Portland win their first MLS game, 4-2.
  • 90' + 1'
And Chicago will have just three minutes of stoppage time for those two goals.
  • 90'
Just stoppage time left for Chicago. I don't see it happening though.
  • 85'
Fire have every right to complain, but there is nothing they can do about it now. Just five minutes for them to score twice now.
  • 84'
    Own Goal Dasan Robinson
  • 84'
    Yellow Card Jalil Anibaba
  • 84'
Corner is headed back into the middle, and it looks to have hit Cooper's hand, but Danso Futty finds a way to poke it home as the ball was being scrambled around on the goal line.
  • 84'
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL PORTLAND!
  • 84'
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL PORTLAND!
  • 83'
Nagbe on for Alhassan. Just the second appearance for the #1 overall pick.
  • 82'
    SubstitutionKalif Alhassan Darlington Nagbe
  • 82'
Uh-oh. Is Portland's perfect day about to be ruined? Chicago haven't looked good this game, but have found a way back into it.
  • 81'
Pappa works a yard of space in the box, and curls a shot towards the far post. Gleeson gets a hand on it, but can only palm it into the goal.
  • 81'
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAL CHICAGO!
  • 81'
Rendition of 'You Are my Sunshine' can be heard in the stadium now. One of the great traditions from Portland.
  • 80'
    Goal M. Pappa
  • 79'
12th corner for Chicago, but they haven't been able to make one count yet.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionJ. Perlaza Eddie Johnson
  • 77'
Eddie Johnson comes on for Perlaza, who was a match winner tonight.
  • 76'
Wallace tees up Jewsbury, but Jack sends his shot on the way to Seattle.
  • 75'
Another great play by Gleeson, as he comes out to punch a Chicago corner away.
  • 71'
Chaves with a neat turn in the box, but his shot is into the side netting. Chicago are starting to make some noise now...
  • 70'
Big run from Zizzo on the counter, but when he finally plays it out wide for Cooper, Cooper is offside.
  • 69'
Sal Zizzo enters the match for Portland, for Jeremy Hall.
  • 68'
    SubstitutionJeremy Hall Salvatore Zizzo
  • 68'
Curse of the commentator? I already said Chicago was done at 3-0, but another goal in the next five minutes will make this real interesting.
  • 66'
That will likely go down as an own goal from Eric Brunner. Pappa got onto the through ball and got a touch on it, but Brunner deflected it past Gleeson, making the score 3-1 in favor of Portland.
  • 66'
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL CHICAGO!
  • 65'
    Own Goal Eric Brunner
  • 65'
Oh boy. #4 was sitting on a platter for Cooper after Johnson spilled another cross, but he totally whiffed on the ball.
  • 65'
Oh boy. #4 was sitting on a platter for Cooper after Johnson spilled another cross, but he totally whiffed on the ball.
  • 64'
Disappointing for Maric. Barouch has to come on for the midfielder, who had just entered the match at halftime. Maric just could not shake off that knock he took though.
  • 63'
    SubstitutionMarco Maric Orr Barouch
  • 63'
Oduro has been lively in the past couple of minutes, setting up Chaves for a shot that is blocked out.
  • 60'
Oduro is played through on goal, but Gleeson comes up big to make his first real save of the game.
  • 60'
Maric is back on the field for Chicago.
  • 59'
Jewsbury takes Maric down from behind, getting a yellow card. Maric will try to run off the injury. Otherwise, Chicago will have to make their final change.
  • 57'
    Yellow Card Jack Jewsbury
  • 57'
Only thing missing from tonight for Portland is a goal from Cooper. Well, a goal that stands, I suppose is the better way to put that.
  • 55'
Free kick for Chicago from 30 yards out, but Chaves puts it straight into the wall.
  • 53'
    Yellow Card Jeremy Hall
  • 52'
Oh, and Alhassan with another chance, but the effort is wide of the target.
  • 52'
Alhassan with a little chip after receiving a cross from Hall, but the ballhits the bar, and bounces out.
  • 50'
That goal probably puts the game out of reach for Chicago. I'd be amazed if they managed to get something out of the game now.
  • 48'
What a howler from Sean Johnson. Jewsbury free kick is taken quickly out wide to Wallace, who sends a cross in. Johnson spills the cross, and Perlaza is right there to poke it in for the 3-0 lead.
  • 47'
    Goal J. Perlaza
  • 47'
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL PORTLAND!
  • 46'
    SubstitutionMichael Videira Marco Maric
  • 46'
    SubstitutionG. Puerari Dominic Oduro
  • 46'
Oduro came on for Puerari for Chicago. And Maric is on for Videira as De Los Cobos looks to shake things up.
  • 46'
Second half is underway. A couple of changes to note.
  • Chicago ended up with an almost even share of the possession, but they weren't as clinical with it. And they didn't manage a single shot on target.
  • Don't hate me for leaving your team off. It was either shortsided on my part, or there was a reason why. Please don't fill up my inbox with hate mail. Thanks!
  • Don't we wish that all atmosphere's could rival those of Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Toronto, and D.C.? The league could do well to get those types of atmospheres at all the stadiums.
  • De los Cobos might have to make a change. His side haven't done well in possession, and a shake up in the lineup might give the team a shock.
  • Chicago have been rather disappointing this far. Little to suggest that they can score tonight. Nothing so far from Nyarko, Puerari, Chaves, and more importantly, Pappa.
  • They'll have to continue to perform to get all three points, but riding the emotions of the crowd just might be enough for them.
  • Hard to imagine a better start from Portland. They looked to have been hard done by the disallowed goal, but they have responded well, and Perlaza and Wallace have them in dreamland after 45 minutes.
  • 45' + 3'
End of the first half. Dreamland for Portland. 2-0 lead at the half. The perfect opening for Timbers Army.
  • 45' + 1'
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played.
  • 45'
Yup, I was right. That was Gavin Wilkinson who got sent away by Salazar. Wilkinson is the general manager of Portland.
  • 44'
That person who interfered with the ball looked like someone who might work for Portland. Whoops.
  • 43'
    Yellow Card Kalif Alhassan
  • 41'
Timber Joey at it again, cutting off another piece of the log.
  • 38'
Jewsbury's free kick bounces through the box, and it sits up nicely for Rodney Wallace. The shot took a deflection, but found it's way into the netting at the far post. 2-0 to Portland.
  • 38'
    GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL PORTLAND!
  • 37'
    Goal Rodney Wallace
  • 37'
    Yellow Card Cory Gibbs
  • 37'
Gibbs takes down Purdy near the corner flag, earning a yellow card in the process.
  • 35'
I am being told that the goal was assisted by Alhassan, and not Wallace, as I had mentioned. Apologies.
  • 35'
This is the first time that Portland have led all season. What a time to do it though. Timbers Army is still in full voice, of course.
  • 32'
The delay in the game is actually due to the fact that Cory Gibbs was taken off the field with a head injury.
  • 32'
And here we go. The first cut of the log by Timber Joey this year. Looks like we might have taken a break from the game for that!
  • 31'
Pause actually ran into Johnson, taking both of them out of the play as Perlaza scored.
  • 29'
    Goal J. Perlaza
  • 29'
Perlaza scores the first goal at Jeld-Wen Field. Looks like a ball from Wallace that sends Perlaza through, and he cuts behind a defender in the box, and fires around Johnson for the lead.
  • 29'
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL PORTLAND!
  • 29'
Another free kick for Chicago, from almost the same spot, but Puerari's free kick is headed out.
  • 28'
Don Garber is on the broadcast at the moment. His reminder was that refs aren't under the jurisdiction of the league, as per FIFA rules.
  • 27'
Dangerous free kick for the Fire. But Puerari's delivery into the box is headed out.
  • 24'
Nyarko with a decent cross into the box, but Gleeson rises high to grab that out of the air. Confident keeping by the youngster.
  • 22'
Chicago haven't found a fluidity in attack yet. And they have had just had 45% of the possession so far.
  • 20'
Nice move from Portland to move that ball into the box, but Perlazza's ball to Cooper was too wild for the striker to control.
  • 17'
Handbags between the teams now. Segares picks up a yellow in the kerfuffle. Harsh tackle on Cooper.
  • 17'
Sounds like the ball was adjudged to have gone out on the corner before it came into the box. Harsh, but I haven't seen it yet.
  • 16'
    Yellow Card Gonzalo Segares
  • 15'
First corner for Chicago, as a long ranger free kick is deflected out. Header is wide of the mark though.
  • 13'
Replays still being shown, but there is nothing to indicate that the goal should have been waved off. Incredible.
  • 12'
Wow. What a decision. Looks like Cooper was adjudged to have fouled Johnson on the corner, but Cooper simply went straight up. That should have stood. Such a shame.
  • 11'
The ball is in the back of the net from the resulting corner, with Cooper getting his head to the ball. But Salazaar has called that back.
  • 10'
Wowsers. Quick corner from Portland, ball is kept in, and Purdy places a howitzer on target, but Johnson knocks it out for a corner.
  • 10'
Quite unfortunately, the pitch is soaked tonight. It's going to be a tough game, soccer-wise.
  • 8'
Cooper with a mishit ball out wide, and then Hall follows up with a shot wide of Chicago's goal.
  • 4'
Not much to report so far. as both teams are trying to get their feet wet -- which won't be hard in the rainy conditions.
  • 1'
    Game on!
  • The national anthem is literally better than you could imagine. This is just over the top.
  • The National Anthem is being sung by the Timbers Army! Couldn't get any better, you know?
  • The teams are heading out onto the field, and the crowd is electric! This is the kind of atmosphere the game is meant to be played in.
  • Portland haven't been in good form so far this season, with zero wins to their name. Chicago have done decently, but could really use a win away from home.
  • Anyone else as excited for this match as I am? Portland have been patiently waiting for their home opener, and Jeld-Wen will be rocking tonight. One can only hope that the play matches the atmosphere.
  • And their subs: Conway, Cuesta, Ristic, Maric, Oduro, Paul, Barouch
  • Chicago's XI: Johnson; Anibaba, Robinson, Gibbs, Segares; Nyarko, Videira, Pause, Pappa; Puerari, Chaves
  • Subs for Portland are: Guppy, Goldthwaite, Nagbe, Zizzo, Johnson, Moffat, Pore
  • I've got some lineups for you, so here we go. Portland: Gleeson; Purdy, Brunner, Danso, Wallace; Hall, Jewsbury, Marcelin, Alhassan; Perlaza, Cooper
  • This is the first match ever at the new Jeld-Wen Field in Portland, as the Timbers finally have a home game. From the stories I have heard so far, the Timbers Army has been at the stadium for hours, excited for the first MLS game in Portland. Just like kids staying up all night on Christmas.
  • Howdy, ya'll. Steven Streff here to bring you commentary of the match between the Portland Timbers and Chicago Fire, to take place on ESPN2 at 11 pm EST.
