Claude Puel's side left frustrated as they fail to bounce back from Valenciennes defeat and are held to a goalless stalemate by Les Girondins.
Olympique Lyonnais failed to make ground on league leaders Lille as they were held to a goalless draw by Girondins De Bordeaux at the Stade de Gerland.
In a tentative game both clubs failed to make the most of their opportunities when presented and both coaches will be left to ponder at what might have been.
The game started at a relatively high tempo with both sides looking to grasp a foothold on the game. Despite the lack of goalmouth action, both teams enjoyed various spells of possession with some lovely intricate football on display.
It was the home side who produced the first real meaningful opportunity on 13 minutes. Brazilian Michel Bastos jinked his way down the right before having a second bite of the cherry to get a cross in that was diligently flicked by the heel of Bafetimbi Gomis into the path of Yoann Gourcuff whose driven effort just inside the 18-yard box was blocked by a blue shirt.
Gourcuff, against his former club, was looking quite impressive and did ever so well to produce a piece of articulate ball control down the right-hand flank before slipping in Kim Kallstrom whose ball into the box was taken off Gomis’ toe.
Lyon were beginning to enjoy more of the possession and centre back Cris had two golden opportunities to put Les Gones in front. Gourcuff produced a fantastic in-swinging corner that eluded the Bordeaux defence as Cris out jumped his marker to meet the ball with his head that subsequently squeezed marginally past a flatfooted Cedric Carrasso’s left-hand post. The Brazilian was ever so unlucky to see his diving header blocked on the line after Gomis flicked on another Gourcuff corner into the path of the defender who was denied by Benoit Tremoulinas’ chest. The Frenchman didn’t know too much about it in truth.
Minutes later, Tremoulinas burst forward down the left and delivered a teasing cross as he edged towards the by-line and Hugo Lloris punched the ball just before Fahid Ben Khalfallah looked to head it home.
Bordeaux had a golden opportunity in the first minute after the interval as Anthony Modeste was slipped in with nobody in his vicinity only to place his right-footed shot into the path of Lloris. The striker failed to make the most of a golden chance and had he been more composed then surely he would have put his team into the lead.
Minutes later he had a chance to make amends but failed to get his half-volley on target via a gorgeous ball into the penalty area by Tremoulinas. The 22 year-old was being heavily pressed by Aly Cissokho prior to his effort which could have plagued his concentration.
The hosts themselves nearly broke the deadlock as Lisandro Lopez did brilliantly to get behind the defence onto a standard long ball but failed to get a meaningful connection at the pivotal moment and was denied by the thigh of Carrasso who made himself big. The Argentine had been an isolated figure for large parts of the ninety and looked to the heavens following the miss.
Both sides were keeping their shape superbly but were somewhat reluctant to press forward in fear of conceding. This resulted in the game petering out with little attacking emphasis on display.
Jimmy Briand’s arrival off the bench seemed to give Les Gones more impetus but it wasn’t enough as the game finished goalless. Lyon are now seven points off the league leaders with Bordeaux jumping into the top half of the table following the result.Follow Goal.com on to get the latest soccer news directly.
