Premier League Preview: Newcastle United - Wigan Athletic

The Tyneside outfit has never lost to the Latics in a league game at St James' Park, and the visiting side is currently on a dubious run of six consecutive losses.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew will not be able to call upon the services of Alan Smith and Michael Williamson, as the duo are currently sidelined with hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.

Sammy Ameobi (hamstring), Danny Guthrie (groin) and Haris Vuckic (hand) are all doubtful as they recover from their injury-related problems.

Young full back Davide Santon made his debut against Tottenham last time out, and could displace Danny Simpson in the lineup. Shola Ameobi is also in contention to break into the starting lineup after scoring against Spurs.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez does not have too many injury concerns, with Ben Watson being his only doubt for this game. The former Crystal Palace man took a knock in the last clash against Bolton Wanderers, and had to leave the pitch at halftime.

  • Newcastle United has never lost to Wigan Athletic in a league game at St James' Park. However, the two sides have met only five times on Tyneside.
  • Alan Pardew's men have begun their Premier League campaign in emphatic fashion, going undefeated in their first eight games. They currently occupy the last available Champions League spot - fourth place - and remain one of only three teams to have not been beaten in the league this season. The other two being Manchester City and Manchester United.
  • Ryan Taylor (pictured right) spent three-and-a-half seasons with the Latics before making a move to the Toon in 2009. But during his time with his former club, the former Tranmere Rovers man scored six goals - four of which were against Newcastle.
  • Wigan Athletic is currently on a losing streak, having fallen to a defeat in its last six games in all competitions.
  • The Latics have scored only six goals in the league this season. No other team has scored fewer. They have also been very poor on their travels, scoring only one goal away from home. They have, however, conceded eight on away days.
  • If all matches had ended at halftime Wigan would have been outside the relegation zone in 17th place, whereas Newcastle would have plummeted down to 10th in the standings.
