M. Sissoko 33'
P. Cissé 42'
Y. Cabaye 67'
J. Hooiveld 79' (own goal)
M. Schneiderlin 3'
R. Lambert 50'
And that's it for today at St James' Park. Newcastle United get the three points but they were, at times, simply outplayed by Southampton. Schneiderlin struck an early opener for the visitors before Sissoko and a stunning strike from Cisse put the hosts ahead. Pochettino's side pulled level after the break through Lambert but Cabaye's penalty and Hooiveld's own goal secured victory for Pardew's men. Newcastle are now up into 14th after the win, while Southampton slip to 16th and are just three points above the relegation zone.
90' + 5'
PEEP! And Chris Fow blows the full-time whistle.
90' + 4'
Another neat knockdown from Lambert inside Newcastle's box is met by Schneiderlin but the midfielder, who opened the scoring today, blasts the ball over.
90' + 2'
Southampton are still trying and Ramirez is looking bright but Newcastle are getting the ball to safety in any way possible.
Superb play from Puncheon. After surging through Newcastle's middle he plays a neat ball into the path of Ramirez but the Uruguayan fails to take full advantage of the chance and the hosts are able to hack the ball clear.
And that's another solid take from a corner from Elliot.
Yellow Card G. Ramírez
Ramirez has a penalty claim turned down. The Uruguayan twists and turns in Newcastle's box and is edged off the ball by Yanga-Mbiwa. Referee Chris Foy waves play on.
Southampton are restoring to longer balls into Newcastle's box now but Elliot is claiming everything in the air with ease.
Southampton are chasing this game now and they need to be wary of Newcastle's counter. The ball breaks to Sissoko and the midfielder bursts clear and clips a ball into the path of Cisse, but the forward is unable to make anything of the chance.
Own Goal Jos Hooiveld
That looks game over for Southampton. Santon drives towards the visitors' box on the left flank and fires a ball across. Fox attempts to clear but smashes his effort into Hooiveld and the ball rockets into Southampton's goal.
Southampton have lost their way a little here. Newcastle are enjoying a lot more time on the ball and the visitors are falling further back into their own half.
Matt Scott reports from St James' Park: "Newcastle go for defensive solidity in midfield with about 15 to go. Yohan Cabaye is replaced by James Perch, who makes his 250th career league appearance."
Newcastle are attempting to slow the game now and are taking their time in possession. Gutierrez wins a corner on the hosts' right flank.
Yellow Card Maya Yoshida
Gaston Ramirez races through and forces a superb save from Elliot. The midfielder's second effort hits the bar but referee Chris Fow flows for a free kick after the Uruguayan handled the ball in the build up to his chance.
That's good defending from Clyne. Cabaye plays a long ball in behind Southampton's defence to send Gouffran on his way but the full-back keeps pace with the Newcastle forward and clears.
It's a little harsh on Southampton. Pochettino's side have been the better in possession after the restart with Newcastle creating very little. The visitors have restarted in the same manner, though, and the Pardew's men are chasing the ball once again.
Penalty Goal Yohan Cabaye
Boruc goes to his left, Cabaye slots the ball into the opposite corner. Newcastle take the lead once again.
Penalty to Newcastle. The ball is slung into Southampton's box into the path of Debuchy on the right flank. The Frenchman attempts to cross the ball first time but his effort is blocked by the arm of Fox.
Still no chances for either side. Fox pumps a ball into the box but Elliot plucks it from the air with ease.
Chances are few and far between at the moment but Southampton are continuing their confidence in possession, while Sissoko, Cisse and Gouffran have all had little support.
Matt Scott reporting from St James' Park: "Things have gone all wrong for Newcastle since the breaka nd Alan pardew has called for Shola Ameobi to be brought on. Can the experienced target man provide a way back into the game?"
Newcastle just haven't got going in his second half so far. Southampton are dominating possession, much like their early spell in the first half, and the hosts are just chasing the ball.
Southampton have their tails up here with Lallana and Lambert combining again to nearly put Southampton ahead. The winger twists and turns on his side's right and crosses to the forward at the back post, who should have scored, but his header was off target.
Assist Adam Lallana
Goal Rickie Lambert
That's a well-worked equaliser for Southampton. Clyne picks the ball up on the right flank and nudges possession into Lallana's path. The winger gets his head up and crosses in low towards Lambert who slots the ball under Elliot.
Southampton have stepped up their pressing game here and are forcing Newcastle to misplace their passes. Yanga-Mbiwa the latest culprit.
And that's a brilliant save from Elliot. Lambert takes the free kick and swerves it with his right foot but the Newcastle goalkeeper matches is with a fine one-handed stop.
And Lambert wins a free kick on the edge of Newcastle's box after being clipped in the face by Yanga-Mbiwa.
And Southampton get us back underway at St James' Park.
Matt Scott reports from St James' Park: "After a poor start for the hosts, they have responded in the best possible way to hold a deserved lead at the break. Moussa Sissoko's close-range effort cancelled out Morgan Schneiderlin's opener, but the home fans will all be talking about their second, an absolute stunner from Papiss Cisse. "The good mood will have been tempered slightly by captain Fabricio Coloccini being forced off late in the half, however."
45' + 3'
And that's half time at St James' Park.
45' + 2'
And that overhead kick looks to have damaged Coloccini as the Argentine defender is taken off for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Assist Rob Elliot
Goal Papiss Cissé
My word. That's some hit from Cisse. A long ball is pumped forward by Elliot which is headed down into the path of the forward who is already shaping to shoot as soon as it moves into his path. Cisse, from at least 25 yards out, smashes the ball first time past a helpless Boruc to give Newcastle the lead.
Coloccini draws a huge cheer from the home fans as he's pressured into a corner by Lambert but the Argentine flicks the ball up and uses an overhead kick to clear.
Yellow Card Luke Shaw
Gutierrez draws a foul on Newcastle's right from Shaw and the Southampton defender is booked.
Sissoko has looked bright all game and the midfielder picks the ball up on the left flank, twists and turned against Clyne to work space for a shot, but the ball is smashed well over Boruc's goal.
Southampton have defended well amid Newcastle's wealth of possession but they've struggled to test Elliot at the other end after Schneiderlin's early opener.
Goal Moussa Sissoko
You can't say it hasn't been coming. Superb work from Gouffran on Newcastle's left flank eventually saw the forward test Boruc from a narrow angle after a series of stepovers. The effort is saved but Sissoko rushes in and taps the ball into an empty net.
Matt Scott with his latest update from St James' Park: "Newcastle are having all the territory at St James' Park, but the defensive pairing of Maya Yoshida and Jos Hooiveld have been terrific so far, backed up by some tenacious work in midfield from goalscorer Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork. "Mathieu Debuchy's wayward volley from distance is the only really tangible effort the Magpies have carved out since Papiss Cisse's shocker."
And another free kick is cleared by Southampton but only as far as Debuchy, who hits the ball first time on the volley but fails to get his effort even close to Boruc's goal.
Southampton are looking comfortable with anything in the air today. Another free kick is swung in by Newcastle and the visitors clear with ease.
Rodriguez picks up a yellow for chopping down Gutierrez who was surging forward in possession.
Yellow Card Jay Rodriguez
Newcastle are still trying to break Southampton down but the visitors are holding firm. The hosts, at times, are short of ideas and resort to a long pass which is easily dealt with by Pochettino's men.
Another Newcastle corner and Cabaye's ball in is met by Steven Taylor who clatters into Yoshida but the effort is deflected over.
Again, that's neat from Tiote. Shaw's ball into the box from Southampton's left finds the Ivorian, who is pressed and hurried in possession, but the midfielder simply gets his head up and plays his way out of trouble.
And Cisse has spurned Newcastle's best chance of the half so far. Sissoko plays a superb ball into the onrushing Debuchy, who crosses low to Cisse but the forward, despite being in acres of space, gets in a middle and screws his shot wide of Southampton's goal.
Sissoko picks the ball up on Newcastle's left flank, cuts inside and attempts to clip the ball into the box towards Cisse. The cross is too long, however, and Shaw allows the ball to run out of play.
Cabaye's corner from Sissoko's saved effort is poor and Southampton clear their lines.
Matt Scott reports from St James' Park: "Newcastle are working their way back into the game after Southampton's early goal through Schneiderlin. Cisse chases down Clyne and cuts the ball back to Sissoko, whose low drive forces Boruc to palm behind for a corner."
Newcastle need to throw more people forward in their attacks. Cisse is played through towards the left side of Southampton's box but the striker is isolated and is boxed out by five red shirts.
Nice from Tiote, though. The midfielder again is pressed whilst in possession by Southampton but he's able to play his way out of trouble.
Newcastle are struggling to find rhythm at the moment. Cabaye finds Cisse with a neat ball but the striker is surrounded by three Southampton players and subsequently loses possession.
Newcastle's corner reaches Debuchy at the back post and the defender header the ball back across goal. It's cleared as far as Coloccini outside the area but the Argentine's long-range strike is off target.
Looking at the replay, that's a really good header from Lambert to assist Schneiderlin's strike. The forward was moving away from goal but he was able to nod the ball into the midfielder's feet.
Assist Rickie Lambert
Goal Morgan Schneiderlin
Schneiderlin puts Southampton ahead. Cork swings a ball across the pitch towards Lambert. The striker nods the ball down to Schneiderlin who swivels and fires past Elliot.
It's a bright start for Southampton. A free kick from Shaw is cleared by the visitors are enjoying a solid spell on possession early on.
PEEP! And we're underway at St James' Park.
More from Matt Scott at St James' Park: "There are Tricolors hung up all over St James' Park and a chap is going around the edge of the pitch firing berets into the air. It's #FranceDay alright."
Southampton have not been in action since February 9 but will be buoyed after their 3-1 win over Manchester City at St Mary's. Mauricio Pochettino makes two changes from his side's victory over the Premier League champions. Luke Shaw replaces Daniel Fox at left-back, while Adam Lallana starts ahead of Jason Puncheon.
More on the teams and Alan Pardew has made seven changes following his side's 1-0 win over Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday. Rob Elliot replaces the injured Tim Krul in goal. Fabricio Coloccini is the only defender who continues from Thursday's clash as Mathieu Debuchy, Steven Taylor and Davide Santon come in. Cheick Tiote, Yoan Gouffran and Jonas Gutierrez are back in midfield.
And even more from Matt Scott: "Newcastle's defence is the only one in the Premier League to have not contributed a goal to their side all season, but they will be focused on Rickie Lambert this afternoon. The Southampton No.7 is looking for his 100th goal for the club this afternoon and has found the net five times in his last six away appearances in the league."
Our man at the ground, Matt Scott, reports: "Chelsea and Manchester City may well be contesting a top-of-the-table clash and there's the small matter of the Capital One Cup later, but try telling anyone at St James' Park this afternoon that Newcastle - Southampton is just a side-show. "Both teams are three points above the relegation zone and are desperate for the points. The Saints have not come away from Tyneside with three points since the 1996-97 season, when a Matt Le Tissier strike sealed victory. The Magpies' last Premier League home game was an astonishing 3-2 win over Chelsea and the Toon Army, bedecked in berets for 'French Day', would certainly take a repeat of that day."
Southampton: Boruc; Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Cork, S Davis; Rodriguez, Lallana, Lambert. Subs: K Davis, Fonte, Ramirez, Fox, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Puncheon.
The teams are already in, so... Newcastle: Elliot; Debuchy, S Taylor, Coloccini, Santon; Cabaye, Tiote; Gouffran, Sissoko, Jonas; Cisse. Subs: Alnwick, Anita, Yanga-Mbiwa, Perch, Marveaux, Shola Ameobi, Obertan.
