Wonderful sharpness and strength to prevent Hernandez from scoring from close range in the second minute. Faultless handling throughout the game.
Awesome in the air and showed good anticipation against the dangerous movement of Hernandez. One rash moment when he dived in at Rooney and fortunate the United striker blazed over.
Solid display from the right-back as Newcastle defended solidly as a unit. Good intelligence to deny Giggs space to play a killer pass.
Awesome performance from the Argentinian defender against Hernandez's live-wire movement. Clever positioning and always seemed to be in the right place to produce a crucial tackle or block, while also demonstrating impressive pace.
The Spanish full-back looked a class act on the ball, always willing to receive possession and never being rushed under pressure. Got forward well and didn't give Nani a sniff as he defended astutely.
Fine mazy run and shot in the early stages set the tone for a first-half during which he always threatened United right-back John O'Shea.
Quietly effective in central midfield alongside Tiote as he pressed the visitors' midfielders and used the ball calmly.
The Ivorian was in fine form as the defensive screen in the hosts' midfield. Held his position well, showed great strength and efficient with his use of the ball.
The Newcastle captain was at the heart of his side's excellent start with his dangerous delivery and non-stop running. Tenacious throughout but his influence waned as the game went on.
Worked hard defensively to deny Carrick time on the ball and showed flashes of space, but lacked quality in the final third. Had a good chance with a free header from 12 yards but his effort went badly wide.
The striker's size and strength made him the focal point of the Newcastle attack. Seemed to enjoy his physical tussle with Vidic and Smalling but did not get the better of the United defenders.
E. van der Sar
Hardly tested but calm when his side were under pressure in the early part of the game.
The Irishman looked extremely vulnerable against the direct running of Gutierrez, allowing himself to be beaten too easily and too many times.
A typically efficient defensive display from the United captain as he made vital blocks and won important headers when his side was under pressure.
Seemed to relish the challenge against Ameobi with a strong, commanding performance as he dominated the Newcastle forwards as well as making important blocks.
The French left-back had a tough evening up against Joey Barton, who was able to drift into spaces where he could cross the ball unchallenged. Showed a good engine as he made strong forward runs to support the attack and created a wonderful chance for Giggs.
Looked a little lost in the first-half when he played in his traditional role on the wing and lacked penetration. Improved as the game went on and missed the target after being presented with a great opportunity from 10 yards.
The Geordie, back in his hometown, was far too passive in the first-half but grew in stature. Sweeping passes helped United put pressure on Newcastle as they looked for a goal.
The Brazilian looked well off the pace and was ineffectual for most of the 70 minutes before he was substituted. Produced one gorgeous long ball for Hernandez but perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty for a challenge on Lovenkrands in the box.
Ludicrous dive in the first-half probably summed up why his fellow professionals did not vote for him as player of the year. It also reflected a frustrating match for the Portuguese winger as Enrique dealt with his pace and skill. Replaced by Owen in the 80th minute.
Should have opened the scoring in the second minute but saw his close range effort smothered by Krul. Always on the move as he sensed an opportunity to find the net. Booked for diving late on.
Missed a glorious first-half chance as he ran through on goal but blazed his shot over the bar. Not at his best but wanted to take responsibility, demanding the ball from team-mates and taking potshots at goal.

Finally made his Newcastle debut and his first involvement was to volley narrowly wide from 20 yards. Did most of his work off the ball following his 69th minute introduction.
- 42 S. Kuqi
Replaced Ameobi in the 72nd minute to add fresh legs to the home side. Ran hard as he pressed the Manchester United defenders.

Replaced Anderson in the 70th minute and stretched the play by hugging the touchline. Produced a dangerous late cross for Rooney.
Replaced Nani 10 minutes from time to a chorus of boos and chants accusing him of greed. Seemed all set for him to score the winner but, in reality, his introduction had little impact.
