Could maybe have made a better attempt with Kuyt’s deflected strike for the goal but otherwise difficult to fault the youngster.
Sometimes looked rushed in his defensive duties and got his lines crossed with Krul at one point that nearly provided an opening for Liverpool – but he was spared by his teammates. Improved in the second half.
Solid from the former Arsenal man, kept close to Torres and limited the Spaniard’s contribution.
Linked well with Gutierrez and coped well with everything that came down his side.
Started off a bit shaky, especially with his distribution from the back, but grew into the game as it progressed. Disciplined defensively and difficult to get past.
Lovely dinked cross into the back post from the free-kick that lead to the goal and continued to provide quality from set pieces. Took his goal well, stealing in between the trailing defenders to slide his shot into the bottom left-hand corner.
Grabbed an early goal for his side with a tidy finish from close range, stabbing the ball past the helpless Reina. Tidy in possession throughout and was replaced by Alan Smith as the hosts looked to close out the game.
Committed without the ball and classy in possession, is able to turn to create space in a crowded midfield.
Combined well with his strike partner before going off injured in the second half. Put a shift in but didn’t have a chance to add to his three league goals this season.
Released into the box early on by Gutierrez but a miscontrol allowed Reina to come off his line to collect. Should’ve done better with this chance but quickly redeemed himself with a good knock down for Nolan to assist the opening goal. Took his goal beautifully in the second half, hammering the ball into the right-hand side of the goal from distance.
Beaten from point blank range for Nolan’s opening goal but otherwise looked comfortable despite conceding three goals.
Booked for a pointless nibble at the back of Gutierrez’s legs once the ball had gone but made some powerful runs down the flank.
Astute positioning and got his head onto more than his fair share of crosses into the box. Came close to leveling for his side with a header at the end of the first half.
Understated performance from the former Fulham defender. Sprayed a lovely pass over the top for Torres in the second half that the Spaniard failed to capitalize on.
Lacked the same air of authority as his partner at center back but was more reassured in the second half and stuck tight to Ranger after his energetic introduction.
Looking increasingly assured at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield. The Brazilian was calm under pressure and played some cute passes. Lashed a snapshot wide from deep under pressure after a corner.
Spurned a good chance as he made a dash into the box from deep to meet Johnson’s cross and sent his header over the bar. Shameful attempt to win a penalty at the end of the first half after a lovely passing move by the visitors but his movement was positive and he was a good creative outlet. Replaced by Jovanovic as Liverpool chased an equalizer.
Good movement and provided some quality crosses in the penalty area. Nearly saw a well executed strike ricochet into the bottom right-hand corner, but it was cleared from the line. Happy to get back and contribute defensively, made a couple of timely interventions.
Workmanlike from the Dutchman, covered a lot of ground but was more guts than guile. His other midfield partners were more creative with the ball in their possession but he was the one to drag his side back into the game with a deflected effort.
Quite wasteful with the possession he got in the first half and was quick to tumble under contact. Was put through by Konchesky for a one-on-one with Krul and wasn’t convincing, sending his shot straight at the keeper. Brightened as the second half went on but didn’t get the ball in meaningful areas.

Injury time introduction to allow Barton to receive a standing ovation.
- 8 D. Guthrie
Had a great chance almost immediately after being introduced but fired wide from the left-hand side of the box. Didn’t let this get him down and he continued to be lively, constantly harassing the Liverpool defenders. Definitely gave opponents something to think about.
Replaced Nolan late in the game, didn’t put a foot wrong.
