New York Red Bulls 0-2 Sporting Kansas City: Sporting hands New York first home loss of the season

First-half strikes from C.J. Sapong and Kei Kamara increased Sporting's lead atop the East.

Sporting Kansas City handed the New York Red Bulls their first loss of the season at Red Bull Arena in a 2-0 result in front of a sparse crowd of 10,286.

Sporting KC got off to a great start when Graham Zusi hit a free kick from the top of the box that crashed off the crossbar. The Red Bulls failed to clear and Matt Besler played the ball to C.J. Sapong, who swiveled and finished in one motion from inside the box.

In just the 19th minute, the visitors jumped out to 2-0 lead after Kei Kamara headed home a Zusi corner in front of Wilman Conde.

The Red Bulls threw on Kenny Cooper and later Sebastien Le Toux in the second half, but despite a flurry of chances, New York could not find the back of the net. With the loss, the Red Bulls stayed in third place in the Eastern Conference, while Kansas City solidified its spot atop the conference, opening its lead to four points over Chicago.

New York will look to rebound on Saturday when it visits New England, while Sporting KC also returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Canada to take on the Montreal Impact.
