SJ Earthquakes win Aggregate 3 - 2

Live Commentary

  • That's it for me tonight. Expect player ratings later. I'll part with a statement of thanks, Juan Pablo Angel will be missed.
  • A fantastic upset by San Jose! Bobby Convey leads the Quakes to the Eastern Conference Finals(?)!
  • 90' + 2'
That harmless, lofted shot aptly describes Rafa's night.
  • 88'
Titi had a chance to equalize the series, but his free header goes over the bar!
  • 84'
    SubstitutionCarlos Mendes Thierry Henry
  • 84'
    SubstitutionJ. Agudelo Ibrahim Salou
  • 84'
    SubstitutionChris Albright Jeremy Hall
  • 84'
RBNY mass substitution: Henry for Agudelo, Hall for Albright, and Salou for Mendes.
  • 81'
    Yellow Card Jon Busch
  • 81'
    Goal Chris Wondolowski
  • 81'
And SJ reclaims the lead! Wondo finds space in the box and he heads over Bouna. 3-2 SJ!
  • 78'
    Goal Juan Pablo Angel
  • 78'
And Angel equalizes the series!!!! Agudelo gets into the box and chips to the legend who finishes with his head. The veteran deservedly points to the rookie in celebration.
  • 77'
Convey takes the lead! He starts the play, runs through, turns on Ream, and smacks his finish past Bouna.
  • 76'
    Goal Bobby Convey
  • 75'
    SubstitutionGeovanni A. Álvarez
  • 75'
I think it's time to ordain Agudelo as the next Jozy. Alvarez comes on for Geo, by the way.
  • 72'
Lindpere rifles Agudelo through whose touch sends him slightly wide. He serves in a dangerous cross, but it's cleared.
  • 71'
Brandon McDonald was just chilling alone on that corner kick. Luckily, Ream was there to knock away the cross.
  • 65'
From the Red Bull Twitter feed: Attendance tonight: 22,839, a club record for a home playoff match.
  • 64'
Johnson propels a counterattack by charging down the center and playing wide to Geo who cuts in and has his effort saved by Bouna.
  • 61'
Angel's freekick is now orbiting around Red Bull Arena.
  • 60'
Jon Busch matches Bouna's earlier save. The ball squibbed to Ballouchy outside of the six-yard box, but the keeper comes up huge.
  • 58'
Shots of Titi warming up on the sidelines. A substitute goal could go a long way in justifying his signing.
  • 54'
Marquez curls a freekick that barely misses out on the near post.
  • 53'
Agudelo draws another freekick in a dangerous spot. Ward with a late, silly challenge.
  • 51'
Harkes ranting and conjuring the 2002 World Cup after Rafa's head clashes with Johnson's chin.
  • 49'
Miller cuts into the New York Area, but his shot eludes the frame and lands in 101.
  • 48'
Marquez almost scores when an awkward Chris Albright cross skips into the box. His touch was just as strange as the right back's pass.
  • 45'
Second half under way in Harrison.
  • How long until Henry makes his entrance? Backe doesn't have any other sub to really push his club over the top.
  • I wouldn't say the Red Bulls deserved a goal; nonetheless, they did control the run of play after the initial letdown.
  • 45' + 4'
Eduardo enters for the leftback. Some action on both ends, but the half-time whistle is blown.
  • 45' + 2'
Albright and Marquez in Wondo's face. Also, Corrales is taking off his armband as well as he's coming out of the match due to injury.
  • 45' + 1'
If Andy Najar could win the Rookie of the Year, Seba Le Toux should win the MVP. (I'd disagree with both decisions)
  • 45'
    SubstitutionRamiro Corrales Eduardo
  • 43'
Lindpere plays Richards into an abundance of space, but his effort was blocked as he hesitated before firing.
  • 42'
Bouna whose made some fantastic saves this season comes up with his biggest of the season. Johnson redirect a cross on goal, but Bouna was there to knock it away.
  • 39'
Agudelo cuts within the SJ six-yard box before blasting off the inside of the near post. He's been phenomenal tonight.
  • 38'
"This commentary is so bad." - My Brother. He's not appreciating J.P. and Harkes' mindless chatter.
  • 34'
Angel nearly regains RBNY's advantage, but Busch punches the ball away as the Colombian simultaneously cranes for his header.
  • 33'
Both Corrales and Albright back on the pitch. The Quakes' captain received a yellow for his challenge.
  • 32'
    Yellow Card Ramiro Corrales
  • 31'
Ramiro Corrales' tackle comes up high on Albright whose scream registers on the telecast.
  • 30'
Ballouchy's half-volley strikes off the back of Angel. Unfortunate for the Red Bulls after Marquez served an audacious, swerving cross.
  • 27'
Tim Ream, the recipient of ROY in my heart, saves the Red Bulls with a wonderful tackle as Wondo prepared to take the lead.
  • 25'
A nice spell here for the Red Bulls. They're getting down the flanks and putting some crosses in. Of course, Roy Miller kills the rhythm by skying a wild shot from distance.
  • 22'
Agudelo looks completely comfortable while Angel hasn't been able to find the ball enough.
  • 17'
Roy Miller possesses the least stylish backheel in MLS.
  • 16'
Agudelo is too strong. It's ridiculous.
  • 13'
Agudelo draws a freekick, but Angel's bent effort goes high and wide.
  • 12'
And now John Harkes is berating Rafa Marquez for not following Convey on the goal.
  • 10'
Injuries early here. Dane walks off after getting tackled and now McDonald is on the field after falling awkwardly.
  • 8'
And SJ almost scores a second. Johnson breaks loose on the left, but Coundoul firmly punched his shot. He followed up with a header that just evades the far post.
  • 6'
    Goal Bobby Convey
  • 6'
Bobby Convey equalizes the series six minutes in! A cross drops in the RBNY area and the former Nat easily sidefoots past Bouna.
  • 5'
Mendes commits the first foul of the match with a harsh tackle on the Brazilian. Free kick leads to a tame left-footed effort by Wondo.
  • 4'
A poor first corner by Geo as Mehdi Ballouchy harmlessly headed away his cross from the fringe of the six-yard box.
  • 2'
Wondo's slip just showed the slickness of the RBA turf.
  • 1'
And they've kicked off in NJ with two successive long balls from the outside backs of the Red Bulls.
  • I'm disappointed that Khari Stephenson didn't make the starting eleven. He's one of the few Division III players in the league and among my favorite MLSers.
  • If you have a twitter account and any insight or a snide comment about Harkesy's commentary, tweet @goalusa and I'll repost it here.
  • After the 1st leg how Agudelo and Geo respond should be interesting. Can the youngster play with the same confidence? And will the veteran right his waning form?
  • And for their opponents: Busch, Corrales, McDonald, Ward, Hernandez, Cronin, Convey, Sealy, Wondolowski, Geovanni, Johnson. Subs: Edwards, Burling, Leitch, Ring, Stephenson, Alvarez, Eduardo
  • Tonight's starting XI for the New York Red Bulls: Coundoul, Miller, Ream, Mendes, Albright, Lindpere, Ballouchy, Marquez, Richards, Angel, Agudelo. Subs: Sutton, Petke, Ibrahim, Robinson, Henry, Tchani, Hall.
  • What's up y'all? It's Avery Raimondo here accompanying you from stormy Long Island for tonight's playoff match between the New York Red Bulls and the San Jose Earthquakes.
