Lowly United will look to play spoiler against its Atlantic Cup rivals, who are right in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff hunt.
United (3-17-5) travels Saturday for a third meeting with the Red Bulls (11-9-6) this year. After the teams played to a scoreless draw at New York in March and the Red Bulls picked up a 2-0 win at D.C. in April, United will need a two-goal triumph to retain the Atlantic Cup.
It's an important match for the Red Bulls, who are winless in three and coming off an embarrassing loss to Western Conference cellar dweller Chivas USA. New York could be without center back Jamison Olave (quad), left back Roy Miller (Achilles) and reserve fullback Connor Lade (knee).
Although the Red Bulls could take over first place with a win, they could also fall out of the playoff field entirely with a loss to United and other results not going their way.
