Theirry Henry scores straight from a corner to seal a 3-1 comeback win over Columbus after New York coughed up the lead in the third minute. Two late Theirry Henry corners made the difference as the New York Red Bulls roared back from an early Columbus Crew goal to win 3-1.
Columbus opened the scoring in only the third minute. Jairo Arrieta turned Conor Lade inside and then skinned him on the outside. Markus Holgersson could only tip the ball into the path of Milovan Mirosevic, who one-timed past Bill Gaudette.
The Red Bulls responded before the 10 minute mark. Rafa Marquez lofted a ball into the box from within his own half. Henry took it down with some elan, coolly side-footing home to equalize.
New York surged forward in the second half, chasing a win at home. After a series of chances, Dax McCarty hit a fierce bending shot from distance that Andy Gruenebaum dove to push around the post. Gruenebaum also somehow got a hand to the shot when the ball fell to Henry in the box with less than 15 minutes to play. In all the goalkeeper made five saves.
From the resulting corner, Henry put the ball to the back post where the diminutive McCarty headed home. Gruenebaum lunged at it, but only managed to hurl himself face-first into the post, causing his eyebrow to bleed and forcing him to go off with what looked like a concussion. He was replaced by third-string Matt Lampson, with Will Hesmer ruled out of the season with hip surgery.
Lampson showed his inexperience in stoppage time. Henry set up for a corner on the other side and lofted an 'olimpico' in off the far post.
