New York Red Bulls 1-1 Chivas USA: Late equalizer saves point for New York

New York Red Bulls 1-1 Chivas USA: Late equalizer saves point for New York

Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy nearly made the difference but was finally beaten late as the home side secured a draw.

Peguy Luyindula headed home a corner kick in the dying moments of the match to give the New York Red Bulls a 1-1 draw against Chivas USA.

For the majority of the match, the Red Bulls had difficulty finishing despite having multiple attempts. Australian international Tim Cahill was replaced by Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 29th minute after sustaining a hamstring injury and was badly missed.

The visitors broke through minutes before the substitition when Mauro Rosales stormed down down the right side of the New York penalty box and put in a cross toward Thomas McNamera. The rookie lept to get his head to the ball but instead was brought down by Richard Eckersley, and referee blew for a spot kick.

Erick Torres sent the resulting penalty down the middle unconvincingly, but Luis Robles dove to his left and the visitors had a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

The Red Bulls attempted to reverse their fortune in the second half, with a Lloyd Sam cross falling to Bradley Wright-Phillips who missed the chance from close range.

Sam was involved again in the 66th minute, combining with Armando and putting in a ball that was scuffed by a Chivas USA defender. Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy came to collect and collided with an onrushing Red Bull, and while the ball eventually ended up in the net, it didn't count because of a foul.

Wright-Phillips had a chance again in the 72nd minute when Armando sent a seeing-eye pass through the center of the pitch and put the player in on Kennedy, but the goalkeeper came out as the winner of that battle.

The barrage continued with the Red Bulls getting chance after chance, including a stunning volley attempt from Dax McCarty 10 minutes from time, but Kennedy was equal to all the challenges until stoppage time when Luyindula gave the Red Bulls their third draw of the season.
