MLS Preview: New England Revolution - Sporting Kansas City

MLS Preview: New England Revolution - Sporting Kansas City

Jassen Vinlove

Unbeaten in five games, defending MLS champion Sporting KC travels to New England for a Eastern Conference playoff rematch.

Five months after an intense Eastern Conference semifinal that took 210 minutes to decide, Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution will meet again.

Kansas City sits atop the Eastern Conference at 3-1-2, with a five-game unbeaten streak since falling in Seattle on opening day. The Revolution, meanwhile, have gone 2-1-2 since starting the season with back-to-back losses.

The clubs last met in that conference semifinal second leg, when Seth Sinovic's late equalizer and Claudio Bieler's extra-time winner gave Sporting KC the 4-3 aggregate win.

New England will be without several key players in this contest, with center back Jose Goncalves (quad) and playmaker Kelyn Rowe (hamstring) doubtful to play and fullback Kevin Alston suspended. Attacking catalyst Diego Fagundez (back/neck) also is questionable.

The absences mean Andrew Farrell could get another nod at center back, with Chris Tierney returning to the starting lineup at left back and Daigo Kobayashi retaining his place in attacking midfield.

Kansas City will likely make few changes after last week's 4-0 thrashing of Montreal, though Uri Rosell is expected to return from suspension and take Lawrence Olum's place in central midfield. With C.J. Sapong (neck) still sidelined, look for coach Peter Vermes to again deploy Sal Zizzo, Dom Dwyer and Graham Zusi in his three-man front line.
