Nancy 2–3 Olympique Lyonnais: Jimmy Briand Brace Helps Poor OL To Dramatic Victory

Les Gones scrambled to a victory in Lorraine after a pulsating match.

A five-goal thriller in Ligue 1 saw Olympique Lyonnais move out of the relegation zone with a 3-2 success over Nancy, but they made hard work of an ill-deserved victory.

Lisandro Lopez had offered little in the game before he opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break, but the goal was really about the interplay between Yoann Gourcuff and Jimmy Briand that unlocked the home side down Lyon’s right. An astute pass from the playmaker released Briand down the channel, before he centred low for ‘Licha’ to tap home.

When Lyon moved 2-0 up 10 minutes after the break they seemed to have made the decisive move. Gourcuff’s quick free kick was the catalyst, sending Jeremy Pied off down the left to cross for Briand to head home.

But little about Lyon’s season has been simple, and they quickly conceded a goal that swung the momentum back towards the hosts. A Benjamin Gavanon free kick was powerfully headed into the net by Andre Luiz.

On 70 minutes, Nancy levelled a pulsating match. Another set play from Gavanon was terribly dealt with by les Gones’ defence. Hugo Lloris failed to punch clear off the head of Joel Sami, and the ball dropped at the feet of Feret, who made no mistake from little more than six yards.

Incredibly, Lyon, who had barely posed a meaningful offensive threat all night, moved ahead once again when a miscommunication in the home defence saw Sami head the ball practically out of Braciglaino’s gloves straight to Briand, who turned the ball home from the edge of the box.

Prior to the second half goal flurry, it had been the hosts who were the more dynamic offensive force, looking the likelier side to open the scoring for much of the first period. Bakar had the best chance, but Lloris grabbed the ball as the striker tried to round him.

Feret had a golden chance to level for the Lorraine side just after the break while the score was still 1-0, but he shot over with the goal gaping and Hadji was denied by the goalkeeper when clear with the scores at 2-2.

Late in the game, Jonathan Brison fired just wide following more poor OL defending.

It was a story of missed chances for Nancy, who have yet to pick up a point on their new plastic pitch. The Lorraine club had a real chance to stab a dagger into Claude Puel’s reign of Lyon manager, but it was missed and the increasingly under pressure OL boss lives to fight another day, with his side out of the drop zone.
