Morelia 1-3 Monterrey: Defending CONCACAF Champions League champ takes significant quarterfinal advantage

-

Sixth place in the league and without an away win since October, Monterrey threw the form book out of the window to beat Morelia in the CCL.

In an all-Mexican CONCACAF Champions League clash, Monterrey took a significant step towards the semifinal round with a 3-1 first leg away win over Morelia.

Morelia may be in better form domestically, sitting in first place in the Primera Division, but it came up against a reigning CCL champ eager to repeat.

Goals from Humberto Suazo -- a penalty followed by a one-touch chipped finish in the box -- gave Monterrey a two-goal lead in the first half. Joel Huiqui pulled one back with a looping backpost header, but Dario Carreno restored the two-goal aggregate cushion in injury time when he finished his own rebound.

Jonathan Orozco made several clutch saves, especially in the first half, to maintain Monterrey's lead. La Pandilla will host the return match on March 13.
