It wasn't the prettiest of displays, but Toronto FC managed to keep level with hosts Montreal Impact in their Canadian Championship semifinal first leg.

Montreal Impact and Toronto FC fought to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night at the Olympic Stadium to kick off the 2012 Amway Canadian Championship.

After a slow start to the first half in which both sides were tentative in attack, Montreal began to assert itself. The final 30 minutes of the opening frame was dominated by Impact possession, although the home side could only muster a handful of chances.

The best opportunities fell to Lamar Neagle and Bernardo Corradi, with the Italian especially getting decent looks at Milos Kocic's goal. For his part, Kocic was equal to every Montreal attempt, and a slew of corner kicks for the hosts went for naught.

It was much of the same to start the second half, with Toronto seemingly content to allow its host to keep the lion's share of the ball. It nearly backfired in the 67th minute as Sanna Nyassi found the back of the net after receiving a good cross, but the Gambian was judged to have been offside.

There was little else in the way of chances for either side after that, as TFC packed the midfield and left Quebec with the away draw.

The teams will reconvene in Toronto on May 9 for the second leg of the series, with the winner facing the victor of the FC Edmonton-Vancouver Whitecaps series.
