"This is a historic win, because we're debutants," Xolos coach Antonio 'El Turco' Mohamed said. "This is a team of real men; we were not frightened by the altitude."
Richard Ruiz scored the game's only goal. American international Edgar Castillo crossed from the left flank and the ball eluded both Xolos strikers to fall to Ruiz on the far side. Ruiz drilled a low volley back across the goalkeeper and into the net to open the scoring just after the hour mark.
Roman Torres earned a second yellow card deep in stoppage time to reduce the home side to 10 men.
"Our priority is the Libertadores, next weekend I'll have the subs play in the Liga MX. We're a humble team and that's the key to our success," Mohamed said. "When we host Millonarios, we'll come out and attack them."
Bolivia's San Jose and Corinthians, who play Wednesday, comprise the rest of Group 5.
