Live Commentary

  • 90' + 6'
Incredible! Jamaica secures a 0-0 draw in Azteca. This is a huge result for the Reggae Boyz, and will point plenty of questions at El Tri. The stadium is raining down boos on the Mexican team.
  • 90' + 4'
    Yellow Card H. Moreno
  • 90' + 4'
Moreno becomes the fist Mexican booked this game. He snuffed out a counter in the Jamaica half, before the pace of the Reggae Boyz could stretch the El Tri backline.
  • 90' + 1'
Chicharito lacks the cutting edge today. He flicked his way through a few defenders in the box and had a chance with the outside of his boot, but Ricketts smothered it. A Jamaica defender performed a bicycle kick to clear the ball.
  • 89'
Six minutes added on. That's Fergie time for sure. Jamaica will have to hold on longer than expected.
  • 86'
Peralta clashed heads with Nosworthy going for a high ball. The referee immediately stopped play, but made it clear there was no penalty. We'll have a drop ball in the Jamaica box.
  • 85'
Aquino ran half the length of the field, dipping in between defenders. He finally made it to the endline, where Mariappa ushered the ball out of play.
  • 84'
    SubstitutionGarath McCleary Omar Daley
  • 83'
Peralta had the ball in the box, but couldn't get it out from under his feet. He held off his marker for a spell and ended up dropping a pass back out of danger. Things aren't going Mexico's way in this one.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionRyan Johnson Tremaine Stewart
  • 81'
Stewart replaces Ryan Johnson. Johnson performed well up top alone, but if he could finish Jamaica would have the lead.
  • 80'
    SubstitutionA. Guardado M. Fabián
  • 80'
De la Torre is whistling and pointing. He's used all of his substitutions. Now it's up to the players out there to calm down and create a chance.
  • 78'
Marco Fabian replaces Guardado. He should be able to provide some creativity through the middle.
  • 75'
Azteca isn't full, but the fans are booing El Tri already. We're scoreless heading into the final quarter hour, and Jamaica has had the better chances. Chepo is busy grumbling to his assistants.
  • 70'
It looks like Guardado has gone to the middle in a 4-1-3-2.
  • 68'
Ryan Johnson won't get a better chance if he plays here for a dozen games. Guardado cheaply coughed up the ball in midfield, and Johnson zipped in on goal. Alone against the goalkeeper, he hit a tame shot which Corona scooped up.
  • 67'
    SubstitutionH. Herrera Á. Reyna
  • 67'
In the meantime, Reyna comes into the match for Herrera. Mexico really chasing this now.
  • 66'
Chicharito is receiving treatment on his head. He lost out on a header with Taylor.
  • 64'
That was the chance. That was the one. Torres Nilo centered from the flank. Chicharito tried to back heel it but blocked himself. Ricketts saved the follow up shot, and then Salcido skied his shot.
  • 58'
Bryan Ruiz has scored the equalizer for Costa Rica in the other game. It's 2-2 with Panama.
  • 57'
Aquino has been a threat since entering. He consistently takes his man on and creates chances. The last one required a late challenge from Phillips in the box. Mexico appealed for a penalty, but nothing doing.
  • 56'
A much improved Mexico has been buzzing around the Jamaica net. The last move sizzled out when Herrera played the ball through to Aquino in an offside position.
  • 54'
Jermaine Johnson, a bright spot for Jamaica, comes off for Robinson. His earlier booking might have played into the coach's thinking.
  • 53'
    SubstitutionJermaine Johnson Theo Robinson
  • 51'
Jermaine Johnson stripped Torres Nilo and honed in on goal. Aguilar come back to help the recovering Torres Nilo shut down the counter.
  • 47'
Peralta somehow stayed on the field for the second half and made sure he played his part. First, he headed the ball down for Herrera, who thwacked a shot on target that Ricketts somehow blocked. Then after an Aquino run Peralta shot. It was deflected wide.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionGiovani dos Santos J. Aquino
  • 46'
The second half has kicked off. Hopefully there's a goal or two somewhere in here.
  • Sounds like Aquino will enter for Gio Dos Santos. Bizarre move by Chepo.
  • That's half. Thus far, Whitmore is dominating the tactical battle. This game is choppy and rough, which suits Jamaica perfectly. Mexico can't find a rhythm or flow. Expect Chepo to pull Peralta at half and put on Aquino.
  • 45' + 2'
    Yellow Card Jermaine Johnson
  • 45' + 1'
Starved of service, Chicharito came deep and tried to create for himself. He juked past J. Johnson, but was nicked from behind. Johnson picked up the first booking of the match.
  • 45'
Falling backward, Rodriguez put a header well over the bar from a corner. Doesn't look like there's a goal in this first half.
  • 42'
Phillips looked to go down with a cramp. Either the altitude got to him, he's not fit, or he's wasting time already.
  • 39'
Peralta went down in the box, with Mariappa coming through his back. However, the referee waved play on. No penalty.
  • 37'
Dos Santos keeps drifting from side to side, popping up anywhere he can find space, but Mexico has been relegated to long shots. The latest came from Torres Nilo. Judging by how far he missed by, he might be better leaving speculative shots to others.
  • 30'
Quickly on the other end, Guardado pulled the ball back in the box. Unfortunately for Mexico, Aguilar was the one who ended up on the ball, and he completely whiffed on his shot.
  • 29'
Rudolph Austin trucked onto a stray ball by El Tri and forced a finger-tip save from Corona. Thus far Jamaica has had the better chances in this match.
  • 25'
Thus far Mexico hasn't clicked in the final third. The lack of a central playmaker puts too much pressure on the central midfielders to create, and that's not in their skill sets.
  • 21'
The camera shifted to the Jamaica fans in the stadium. There were nearly twice as many policeman in a border around them than actual fans. Azteca's an intimidating place.
  • 19'
Torres Nilo flipped the ball over McCleary and drove toward the byline. His cross threatened, but Nosworthy ushered it out of danger.
  • 16'
This time Guardado drove in from the flank. He was in prime position in the box when Jermaine Johnson pulled off an expert last-ditch tackle to deflect the ball out of bounds.
  • 14'
Gio drifted in from his right flank and uncorked a long shot on target. Donovan Ricketts awkwardly punched away. The MLS goalkeeper has a tendency to pull of fantastic saves but also make simple errors. Keep an eye on him from long range.
  • 12'
Mexico, still rattled by the early chance for Jamaica, is trying to slow the game down and return to its rhythm.
  • 8'
Oh my. Corona soberly defies Jamaica. Jamaica punctured the El Tri backline. McAnuff latched onto a cross and hit the post. The rebound fell invitingly, but Corona smothered it.
  • 2'
Elsewhere, Panama is 2-0 up on Costa Rica. Panama could push for a first-ever World Cup qualification this cycle.
  • 1'
Kickoff. Jamaica is in yellow, fast out of the gates. Mexico is wearing all white.
  • Surprisingly, Chepo de la Torre sticks with the 4-4-2 which always seems to stunt El Tri's attack. Dos Santos comes in for the impressive Aquino. Herrera (midfield) and Aguilar (right back) keep their spots despite so-so showings against Denmark. Obviously Guardado and Chicharito start.
  • Mexico (4-4-2): Corona, Aguilar, Rodríguez, Moreno, Torres Nilo, Salcido, Herrera, Dos Santos, Guardado, Peralta, Chicharito.
  • Jamaica (4-5-1): Ricketts; Taylor, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Phillips; McCleary, Elliot, Austin, J. Johnson, McAnuff; R. Johnson
  • Hello and welcome to's live coverage of Mexico - Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz have never won in Mexico in World Cup qualifying. With El Tri in white-hot form, the host is expected to win handsomely in its opening match of the Hexagonal.
